It Took 5 Days to Add 1 Million New COVID Cases as U.S. Tops 42M Mark

It took only 5 days to add 1 million new COVID-19 cases surpassing the 42 million mark. According to John Hopkins University, there have bee 42,011,096 cases of COVID-19 resulting in 672,880 deaths. This represents a mortality rate of 1.6%.

It seems like we've gone one step forward and two steps back. On July 16th, when the U.S. surpassed the 34 million mark it had taken nearly two months (58 days) to add 1 million new cases. We are now back at the levels of community spread we saw in January during the dying days of the Trump Administration. The U.S. last added a million cases in five days between January 13th and 18th when we went from 23 to 24 million cases

One can certainly make the case the CDC lifted its mask guidelines too soon. But too many Americans refuse to get vaccinated spurred on by right-wing politicians and pundits discouraging their use through the spread of lies and misinformation. President Biden has implemented vaccine mandates but Republican Governors are resisting. So long as there is this resistance we can look forward to adding a 1 million new cases every 4-5 days with our ICU filled with unvaccinated COVID patients.

The fact that a number of conservative talk radio hosts are dying of COVID hasn't deterred the resistance to vaccines demonstrates that some people insist on learning the hard way. Which means some will never learn at all.
