With only 54% of Americans fully vaccinated, President Biden issued an executive order requiring federal government employees and contractors to get fully vaccinated within 75 days as well as an additional executive order which applies to any business with 100 or more employees. For the latter, employees have the option of weekly COVID tests.
Republicans, it would seem, would rather more Americans die of COVID-19 than get a life saving vaccine. So much for being pro-life. Kentucky GOP Congressman Thomas Massie proclaimed that Biden's mandate is "absolutely unconstitutional." Mind you, this is the same Thomas Massie who only two weeks ago likened vaccine mandates to the Holocaust.
For its part, the RNC plans to sue the Biden Administration over the vaccine mandate. By all means go ahead. What happens when the RNC loses in court? Will Trump supporters try to storm the White House as they did Capitol Hill?
If anything, Biden should have acted sooner on the vaccine mandate. But we're adding a million new COVID cases every week, hospital beds are full and deaths have now begun to surge again. None of this had to happen but for a critical mass of Americans who refuse to be vaccinated for no damn good reason. Biden was left with very little choice.
No doubt this will only entrench vaccine resistance. But if this doesn't get us at or near herd immunity then nothing else will.
