Willie McCovey, R.I.P.

Willie McCovey, one of the few MLB players whose career spanned four different decades, passed away after years of health problems. McCovey was 80.

Originally signed by the New York Giants in 1955, McCovey burst onto the big league scene in 1959 after the team moved to San Francisco. Despite only playing 52 games, his .354 batting average along with 13 HR and 38 RBI made him an unanimous choice for NL Rookie of the Year After several disappointing seasons, McCovey had a breakthrough season in 1963 when he led the NL with 44 home runs earning the first of six NL All-Star Team selections.

Nicknamed "Stretch", in an era where pitching was king, McCovey hit 30 or more home runs in six out of seven seasons. In both 1968 and 1969, McCovey led the NL in both HR and RBI earning his lone NL MVP in 1969. In addition to leading the league in HR and RBI, he also led the Senior League in OBP,  SLG, OPS & OPS+ that season.

The Giants would trade McCovey to the San Diego Padres prior the 1974 season. After two and a half seasons in San Diego, McCovey was sold to the Oakland A's before returning to the Giants in 1977. He would retire during the 1980 season finishing his career with 2,211 hits, 521 home runs and 1555 RBI. McCovey would be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot in 1986 with 81.4% of the vote.

Contemporary fans remember McCovey as the man named after McCovey Cove over the right field wall at AT & T Park in San Francisco where many home runs have been hit over the years. R.I.P.

Would The SC Go Along With Trump's 14th Amendment Shenanigans?

In an interview to be aired this Sunday on HBO, President Trump declared his plans to end birthright citizenship by an Executive Order even though it is enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump stated, "It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don't."

Now it is entirely possible that this is a negotiating ploy much like his threat to withdraw from NAFTA to get Canada and Mexico to the bargaining table. It could be the case that Trump won't proceed with the executive order and instead try to work out a deal with Congress. Nevertheless, there is the possibility he will proceed with the executive order. While any such executive order will be challenged in court I think Trump is prepared to take his chances. Why? With Brett "If The President Does It, It's Not Illegal" Kavanaugh securing a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, Trump probably thinks the court will turn a blind eye to the 14th Amendment.

Of course an argument will be made that President Obama opened the door when he unilaterally implemented DACA by executive order in 2012. But if Trump supporters are going to argue that their man can implement unconstitutional measures because Obama did then they cannot call themselves constitutional conservatives. While Obama certainly overstepped his authority, Trump's act goes much further as it would challenge the very heart of the 14th Amendment itself and effectively render one section of it to be null and void.

If conservatives truly believe the 14th Amendment has been improperly applied and truly believe in the Constitution then propose a constitutional amendment and let the federal government and two thirds of the states ratify it. But I guess now that conservatives have all this power why go to all that effort when Trump can just scribble, hell text, an executive order?

But so long as the 14th Amendment remains as is this proposed executive order should be quashed if attempted. President Trump can no more rewrite the 14th Amendment than a Democratic President can rewrite the Second Amendment.

Sharpton Isn't Fit to Honor Those Who Perished in Pittsburgh

Yesterday there was an interfaith vigil at Temple Emanu-El here in NYC honoring the 11 Jews murdered at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday morning. Among those speaking at the vigil was the Reverend Al Sharpton.

What business does a man who led an anti-Semitic riot in Brooklyn have in mourning the loss of Jews? What right does a man who incited one of his supporters to enter Freddie's Fashion Mart, a Jewish owned business (a man Sharpton called "a white interloper"), shoot several customers and then set the place ablaze killing seven employees in the process have to comfort Jews? Such a man has no such right or business unless he admits his culpability and makes amends. That day will never come. Frankly, Sharpton has about as much business being there as Louis Farrakhan or David Duke. He isn't fit to honor those who perished in Pittsburgh.

Red Sox Win Fourth World Series Title in 15 Years

The Boston Red Sox have defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 to win their fourth World Series title in the past 15 years. Game 5 saw David Price pitch into the 8th inning allowing only one run on three hits. The only run Price surrendered was on his very first pitch when David Freese hit a solo shot. But that is all the offense the Dodgers could muster.

Steve Pearce, who was named World Series MVP, hit two home runs (and three overall in the Series) during the game with Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez each adding solo shots in the sixth and seventh innings. Joe Kelly struck out the side in the eighth with Chris Sale striking out the side in the ninth.

Alex Cora joins Jake Stahl, Ed Barrow, Terry Francona and John Farrell as the fifth Red Sox manager to win a World Series in his inaugural season. Cora led his team to a club record 108 wins plus 11 more in the post-season.

It's amazing that most of the people I've encountered in New York City thought the Red Sox would win in five games at the most. It did look like the momentum had changed when the Dodgers won the 18 inning marathon in Game and had a 4-0 lead into the 7th inning of Game 4 before the Red Sox scored nine unanswered runs off the Dodgers' bullpen.

On a personal note, this World Series triumph is bittersweet as I now live in the Big Apple. Barring any unforeseen developments, with the parade likely to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday I will be unable to attend.

The best I can do is to watch a snippet of the 2013 World Series Parade which is the only video I've ever uploaded to YouTube.

That and wear my Red Sox winter hat around Manhattan until spring training.

Thoughts on The Massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh

After a long night of watching the World Series, I awoke early this afternoon to the news of the very worst of humanity. Six people were killed this morning at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh this morning as a baby naming ceremony was getting underway. There are numerous others wounded including four police officers who have non-life threatening injuries.

While there are some who blame Trump's rhetoric about the migrant caravan for Bowers' act, he thought Trump was controlled by Jews as well. With that said, Trump's condolences were utterly tone deaf when he said the synagogue should have had an armed guard inside. Many synagogues and other Jewish institutions do have armed guards or airport level security that statement is of little comfort to those who have yet to bury their loved ones. Given that the gunman wounded four police officers there is no guarantee a single armed guard would have been enough to prevent what happened today.
Then there are those who speak of more gun control. Given Bowers' level of hatred all the gun laws in the world wouldn't have stopped him.

The truth is that there are no easy answers. Unfortunately that won't stop anyone, Left or Right, from coming up with them.

There is also another truth. No matter how small our numbers, there will be people who will blame the Jews for something they don't like. Among them will be a few prepared to take Jewish lives, be it six or six million.

Seven Hours & Twenty Minutes Over 18 Innings Makes World Series History

I believe history might be the most overused word in the English language. But the word would be apt to describe Game 3 of the 2018 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers won the game 3-2 on a walk off home run by Max Muncy in the bottom of the 18th inning in a contest which took 7 hours and 20 minutes to play. In the 115 year history of the Fall Classic, it is the longest World Series game by both length of time and innings played. Despite the win, the Red Sox still have a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 scheduled to begin in about 14 hours from now. But momentum is now on the Dodgers' side.

This game had everything. Sandy Koufax giving Walker Buehler a standing ovation; Mary Hart pantomiming Craig Kimbrel and Eduardo Nunez experiencing bodily harm nearly every time he ran the bases or made a play. The Red Sox took a lead in the 13th inning on a throwing error only for the Dodgers to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a throwing error. Then there was Nathan Eovaldi's yeoman effort on the mount in relief. Over six innings, Eovaldi threw 97 pitches. He nearly made a mistake in the 15th when Muncy pulled the ball just foul. Muncy would issue a correction in the 18th.

I know I am not doing this game justice. But it is nearly 4 a.m. and, if you didn't watch or listen to the game, you'll have to take my word for it. History was made tonight and well into this morning.

Florida Man Arrested for Pipe Bomb Threats Against Democrats Owns Van Full of Pro-Trump Stickers

Authorities have arrested a 56-year old Florida man named Cesar Sayoc, Jr. in connection with the pipe bombs mailed to prominent Democrats including to former President Obama and to Bill and Hillary Clinton as well as CNN headquarters in New York City.

Yesterday, I put forward the case that the suspect would fit one of three profiles - a) a Trump supporter b) someone from the Left masquerading as a Trump supporter or c) a foreign agent acting on behalf of an adversarial government or terrorist organization.

Well, it looks like it's a). The suspect's van is covered with pro-Trump bumper stickers. No doubt the Alex Jones of the world will insist it is b). That is their stock and trade.

So let us assume for the moment that the suspect is in fact a genuine Trump supporter. The Left is going to have to avoid the mistake of painting the broad brush of Savoc, Jr's alleged actions upon all Trump supporters, but methinks they will make this mistake enthusiastically. If they do then it will cost them. The reality is that if Trump is going to be defeated in 2020 there will have to be a segment of his bloc that defects. But if the Left insists on using that broad brush such a defection will not come to pass and Trump will serve another four years.

Thoughts on Sinead O'Connor Converting to Islam

I am of two minds regarding singer Sinead O'Connor's decision to convert to Islam and change her name to Shuhada Davitt.

It was just over a year ago that O'Connor, now 51, posted a tearful Facebook video in which she declared thoughts of suicide after losing custody of her teenaged son. If her embrace of Islam has helped her overcome suicidal thoughts and bring her peace of mind then it is certainly a positive.

The question is how the onetime Roman Catholic priest will put her newfound faith into practice. Whatever her troubled past, having a prominent woman convert to Islam will automatically make her a global ambassador of sorts. Will she speak of peace or of violence or perhaps both? In other words will she pull a Cat Stevens (a.k.a. Yusuf Islam) and declare Salman Rushdie be put to death for blasphemy? Or will she be more low key like Richard Thompson and let her music do the talking? I cannot help but wonder how her new faith will square with her feminism and her support of liberalizing Ireland's abortion laws.

O'Connor made her announcement alongside Sheikh Umar al-Qadri, a prominent Muslim cleric based in O'Connor's native Ireland. Sheikh al-Qadri has been outspoken in his opposition to ISIS and al Qaeda, interfaith outreach as well as an extending an olive branch to the LGBT community. At the same, however, he has also praised Hamas. On the other hand, al-Qadri has also distanced himself from the Muslim Brotherhood which spawned Hamas in the first place. Under the circumstances, there are far worse people with whom she could have aligned although it will be interesting to see if O'Connor continues her association with al-Qadri or how long she will stick with Islam even at the risk of being an apostate.

Booker & Clapper Now The Latest Mail Bomb Targets

New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper are the latest to be targeted by the mail bomber. Packages addressed to Booker and Clapper were intercepted this morning in Royal Palm Beach, Florida and New York, respectively.

Once again, the person or persons responsible for this aren't going to stop until they are taken into custody. So expect the list to grow larger and larger. So far there have been no injuries and fatalities, but it only takes one package to slip through the cracks.

Tony Joe White, R.I.P.

Tony Joe White, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pioneer of swamp, died suddenly of a heart attack today at the age of 75.

White is best remembered for his "Polk Salad Annie". Inspired by his life in the Louisiana Bayou and Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe", "Polk Salad Annie" became an unexpected hit in the summer of 1969 and would later be covered by Elvis Presley.

White also wrote "Rainy Night in Georgia" which was hit for Brook Benton. After a long dry spell, White's career was revived in the 1990's following a collaboration with Tina Turner.

But "Polk Salad Annie" has endured for nearly half a century. It's not everyone who can say they performed their signature song with both Johnny Cash and The Foo Fighters. R.I.P.

Red Sox Render Schilling Persona Non Grata

Before Game 2 of the World Series last night in Boston, seven members of the 2004 World Series champion Red Sox threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Kevin Millar, Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield, Keith Foulke and Alan Embree each threw out a first pitch and were embraced by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts whose stolen base off Mariano Rivera in Game 4 of the ALCS made the scene possible.

Notably absent was ace pitcher Curt Schilling who lives in Massachusetts. The Red Sox confirmed they did not reach out to Schilling, but said it wasn't done out of spite.

Of course it was done out of spite. The specific spite in question is Schilling's support for President Trump. It's the same spite which is keeping him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame as I argued in my very first article for National Review Online last year. Not only it is keeping him out of Cooperstown, it is keeping out of Fenway Park. This is wrong. Curt Schilling came to the Red Sox to break an 86-year old curse and would not have done so without him. Indeed, if not for Schilling, the Red Sox very well could have been trying to win their first World Series in 100 years.

It's almost enough to make me want to put another curse on the Red Sox and root for the Dodgers.

Three Possible Profiles of The Mail Bomb Culprit

I touched on this a little yesterday, but would like to take a moment to figure out the profile of the person or persons responsible for sending mail bombs to prominent Democrats and to CNN.

The first possibility is that the person in question is a Trump supporter who truly believes Donald Trump's rhetoric about Democrats being a mob and views the media as an enemy of the people and wants to put those views in action. If this turns out to be the case then it will be the legacy of Trump's presidency whether he likes it or not.

The second possibility is that the person in question is a left-wing activist masquerading as a Trump supporter. The likes of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter subscribe to this school of thought. While nothing is beyond the realm of possibility, if it is a member of the "Resistance" they are going to an awful of trouble at the risk not only irrevocably undermining their movement, but strengthening Trump in the process.

The third possibility is that the person in question is acting at the behest of a foreign entity hostile to the United States, be it a nation state like Russia or China or a terrorist organization like ISIS or al Qaeda. Sowing discord in the United States is beneficial to an adversary as was the case with Russia in the 2016 election. If it's possible to plant fake news stories then why not orchestrate a terrorist attack in which one side of the political divide attacks or attempts to attack the other. If its an Islamist terrorist organization it would represent an evolution in tactics. Whereas the 9/11 attacks and the Boston Marathon bombings brought Americans together for a time, this kind of attack entrenches existing divides.

Assuming it turns out to be one of the three scenarios described above, there will always be a segment of the population which doesn't accept the verdict. If it's a Trump supporter then Trump supporters will say fake news. If it's someone on The Left they will call it a cover up for the Trump Administration. If it's foreign actor then we will have a little of columns A & B with little chance for the unity necessary to overcome a hostile external power. In which case, the United States position in the world will diminish that much more.

Twins Hire Longtime Rays Alum Baldelli as New Manager

The Minnesota Twins have hired longtime Tampa Bay Ray Rocco Baldelli to be their new manager succeeding Paul Molitor who was dismissed earlier this month a year removed from a AL Wild Card berth.

The terms of his contract have yet to be disclosed, but might be when the club formally introduces Baldelli later today at a press conference. At 37, Baldelli will be the youngest manager in MLB. That is unless the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays or Texas Rangers have thoughts on that subject.

Baldelli has spent nearly his entire professional career with the Rays organization going back to its Tampa Bay Devil Rays days who made him their number one draft pick in 2000. Baldelli reached the majors in 2003 finishing third in AL Rookie of the Year balloting. Unfortunately, a rare muscle disorder shortened his big league career forcing him retire in 2010 at the age of 29.

Except for one season with the Boston Red Sox, Baldelli was in a Rays uniform. Since his retirement as a player, Baldelli has worked with the Rays in various capacities. In 2014, he was named the Rays' first base coach and in 2018 became the team's major league field coordinator playing a critical role in their unexpected 90 win season this year. This undoubtedly was the deciding factor in the Twins choosing to go outside their organization for a manager for the first time in over 30 years.

Will the Twins be the 2019 version of the 2018 Rays? The Twins are certainly counting on it.

Mail Bombs Addressed to Former VP Biden & DeNiro Intercepted

Former Vice-President Joe Biden and actor Robert DeNiro are the latest targets of the mail bomber who has been sending explosive devices to prominent Democrats and media outlets.

Other packages have been sent to Bill & Hillary Clinton, former President Obama, CNN, former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, George Soros as well as two to Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Unless this person or persons are caught very soon I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before one of these devices goes off and injures or kills someone. Because this person is on a roll and isn't about to stop and until he, she or they are stopped.

Trump: Stop Treating Opponents as Morally Defective...Unless They Vote Democrat

At a rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin this evening, President Trump vowed to bring to justice those responsible for sending mail bombs to former Presidents Clinton and Obama as well as CNN and other prominent Democrats proclaiming, "Political violence is an attack on our democracy itself." Trump added:

No nation can succeed that tolerates violence. The language of moral condemnation and destructive routine, these are arguments and disagreements that have to stop. Those engaged in the political arena must stop treating political opponents as being morally defective.

But this is a Trump rally. He can't bore his audience. Later in the rally Trump stated, "If you're gonna vote Democrat, don't bother."

The message here is clear. Stop treating political opponents as moral defectives...unless they vote Democrat or disagree with me.

And on it goes.

Trump's Call For a "Major Federal Investigation" Into Mail Bombs Targeting Democrats Rings Hollow

In the wake of crude pipe bombs being sent to the office of former President Obama, the home of Bill & Hillary Clinton, Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Maxine Waters, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and CNN headquarters in the Time Warner Building, President Trump has called for "a major federal investigation" into the matter.

Trump's proclamation rings hollow. Let's not forget how he hamstrung the FBI in investigating sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Why would Trump permit an investigation if there is a strong likelihood of wrongdoing by one of his supporters?

Trump claims, “We’re extremely angry, upset, unhappy about what we witnessed this morning and we’ll get to the bottom of it. We have to unify. We have to come together."

These words ring equally hollow. When Trump is not publicly shaming sexual assault victims, he vilifies people because of their national origin claiming they are terrorists all the while acknowledging he has no evidence to support his claims. Since when has Trump let the facts get in the way of his demagoguery?

His call to come together will last until his next rally or his next tweet whichever comes first.

Who is Sending Bombs to the Clintons, Obama & Soros? UPDATE

Explosive devices were discovered this morning both at the home of Bill & Hillary Clinton and the office of former President Obama prompting investigations from both the FBI and Secret Service. This follows the discovery of an explosive device at the home of billionaire and top Democratic Party donor George Soros earlier this week.

The question is who is sending these devices. Naturally suspicion will lean towards a Trump supporter as the targets are on the left of the political spectrum. No doubt the mainstream media will run wild with this speculation in the coming days.

Of course, it is remotely possible the source could be a disgruntled left-winger who thinks Obama, Clinton and Soros haven't gone far enough in their opposition to Trump and sees fit to take their anger out on them.

But what if these devices also end up getting sent to Trump and his allies? At that point, one must suspect international terrorism most likely of the Islamic variety.

Whatever the motivation, whoever is responsible must be stopped and punished for their actions.

UPDATE: Add the Time Warner Building in NYC which, of course, houses CNN. I walk past Columbus Circle on my commute to and from work. Will there be more to come? It's all too much.
UPDATE II: The package sent to CNN was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan who recently had his security clearance revoked by President Trump. This looks like a) the work of a Trump supporter or b) someone going to an awful lot of trouble to make it appear that it is a Trump supporter who is responsible.
UPDATE III: Now add the Florida constituency office of former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. What will President Trump have to say about all of it? Do we really want to know?
UPDATE IV: The package sent to Wasserman-Schultz was actually addressed to former Attorney General Eric Holder, but was sent to W-S because she was listed as the sender. This gets weirder and more sinister by the minute.
UPDATE V: For the moment, President Trump is content to let Vice President Pence do most of the tweeting.
UPDATE VI: Now New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has revealed his office received a device.
UPDATE VII: Congresswoman Maxine Waters has been targeted too.

This Red Sox Fan Thinks The Dodgers Will Sweep The World Series - UPDATE

The 2018 World Series commences tonight at Fenway Park with the Boston Red Sox hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers. It marks the first time the two teams have faced each other in the Fall Classic since 1916 when the Red Sox defeated the Dodgers (then based in Brooklyn and known as the Robins) in five games.

While the Red Sox, who won a MLB best 108 games, are favored to win their fourth World Series title since 2004, this Red Sox fan thinks the Dodgers will sweep them. Although the Red Sox have an edge in offense, the Dodgers have greater depth in pitching especially in the bullpen.

Of course, I have been spectacularly wrong about the Red Sox whether it comes to them ruing the day they fired John Farrell, chasing Alex Cora out of town with a pitchfork or having any regrets over signing J.D. Martinez. So there's a good chance I'll be wrong again and will be glad to be wrong. Well, sort of. I'll explain....should the Red Sox win the World Series.

UPDATE: Well, so much for that prediction. I still think the Dodgers will upset the Bosox.

A Thought for Joe Anoa'i (a.k.a. Roman Reigns)

Like most people, I was unaware that Joe Anoa'i (who the world knows as WWE superstar Roman Reigns) had been diagnosed with leukemia more than a decade ago. The leukemia has returned and Reigns surrendered his WWE Universal Title at a Monday Night RAW event in Providence, Rhode Island.

Although Reigns is billed as a good guy, WWE fans have long given him a hostile reaction because of perceived favorable treatment over other more popular wrestlers. Last night was no exception until Reigns revealed his diagnosis. It is a shame that Reigns has to tell the world he is fighting for his life to receive a measure of kindness.

I hope Reigns can beat cancer again and return to the ring again soon. Perhaps the wrestling crowds will come to appreciate him next time around.

Angels Hire Ex-Tigers Manager Ausmus to Succeed Scioscia

The Los Angeles Angels have a new manager for the first time since 2000. Former Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus will succeed Mike Scioscia as the team's skipper signing a three year contract with the AL West club. Ausmus will be formally introduced at a press conference tomorrow.

Ausmus managed the Tigers from 2014 to 2017 guiding the team to an AL Central title in 2014. After being dismissed from the Tigers at the end of last season, Ausmus joined the Angels' front office as a special assistant to GM Billy Eppler.

The announcement is something of a surprise as fellow special assistant and former Oakland A's third baseman Eric Chavez was considered the favored candidate. But the Angels opted to go with experience in this case.

Earlier today, the Cincinnati Reds named David Bell as their new manager. Can we expect other managerial announcements before Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday? The Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers are all seeking new managers for the 2019 season.

Reds Pass Over Jim Riggleman In Favor of David Bell as New Skipper

The Cincinnati Reds will announce David Bell as their next manager tomorrow morning. Bell was chosen over several candidates including Jim Riggleman who took over the club on April 20th after a 3-15 start under Bryan Price.

For a time, the Reds played .500 ball under Riggleman. By the end of July, the Reds were 45-44 under Riggleman's stewardship. However, the Reds fell under water during August and September for a combined 19-36 record. The Reds finished the season with a 67-95 record, 28.5 games back of the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers. So the Reds decided to go into another direction.

Like many clubs, the Reds have decided to go with a first time major league manager. But Bell is no stranger to the Reds or to baseball. Like New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Bell is a third generation player. He is the son of All-Star third baseman Buddy Bell and the grandson of outfielder Gus Bell, both of whom played for the Reds as did his younger brother Mike Bell. Unlike his father, grandfather and younger brother, David Bell who played 12 big league seasons with six teams never wore a Reds uniform but managed in their minor league system from 2009 through 2012. Bell was part of the Chicago Cubs coaching staff in 2013 and the St. Louis Cardinals coaching staff from 2014-2017 before joining the San Francisco Giants as Vice-President for Player Development this past season. He was also consideration for managerial vacancies with both the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. Bell's father was also a big league manager for parts of nine seasons with the Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals, but had only one winning season. Will the younger Bell be more successful in the dugout?

Bell will have a quite a task in front of him. He inherits a decent offense and poor pitching. Their .254 team average was tied for fourth in the NL while their 4.63 team ERA was better only than the Miami Marlins. Joey Votto had a down season, but third baseman Eugenio Suarez went north of 30 HR and 100 RBI for the first time in his career while Scooter Gennett has gone from journeyman player to bonafide slugger. The Reds have an underrated closer in Rasiel Iglesias and a good setup man in Jared Hughes, but their starting rotation must improve to be competitive. Luis Castillo led the staff with 10 wins. Perhaps Sal Romano, Anthony DeScalfini and Tyler Mahle will have career years in 2019 and perhaps Matt Harvey will experience a renaissance. But the Reds will need at least one more viable starter. Could it be that ex-Yankee Sonny Gray sees brighter days in Cincinnati?

On the other hand, the Reds probably know they aren't ready to win now as they have signed Bell to a contract through 2021. But Bell knows better than anyone that baseball is always filled with surprises.

Dodgers Win Back to Back NL Pennants; Face Red Sox in WS For First Time Since 1916

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 to win their second consecutive NL pennant in Game 7 of the NLCS.

Down 1-0 on a Christian Yelich home run, Cody Bellinger blasted a two run home run to give the Dodgers the lead in the 2nd inning. A three run home run by Yasiel Puig  in the sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Brewers. Dodgers left fielder Chris Taylor also made a spectacular catch off the bat of Yelich to save at least one run. Bellinger was named the NLCS MVP. Much like ALCS MVP Jackie Bradley, Jr., he only batted .200 but got the walk off hit in extra innings in Game 4 in addition to tonight's home run.

The Dodgers become the first NL team to win consecutive pennants since the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 and 2009. They will travel to Boston to begin the World Series on Tuesday at Fenway Park. It marks the first time the two teams have met in the World Series since 1916. At that time, the Dodgers were in Brooklyn and were known as the Robins. It is the longest two teams have gone between World Series meetings. The Red Sox won that series in five games. It remains to be seen if history will repeat itself.

Red Sox Win AL Pennant; Head to 1st World Series in 5 Years

The Boston Red Sox have defeated Houston Astros 4-1 to win their first AL pennant since 2013. The Red Sox vanquished the defending World Series champions in five games sweeping the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

David Price pitched six scoreless innings earning his first ever post-season win. J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers provided the offense with a solo and a three run home run, respectively. I must admit I got nervous when Craig Kimbrel got the ball in the 9th after a shaky post-season. But Kimbrel picked the right time for his best post-season outing.

Red Sox centerfielder Jackie Bradley, Jr. was named ALCS MVP. Despite hitting .200 (3 for 15), Bradley made hits count blasting two home runs with 9 RBI.

First year Red Sox manager Alex Cora who led his team to a franchise record 108 wins during the regular season becomes the first Puerto Rican born skipper to lead his team to the Fall Classic.

Game 1 of the World Series commences on Tuesday night at Fenway Park against either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers currently own a 3-2 lead in the NLCS and could win back to back NL pennants with a victory tomorrow night in Milwaukee. If the Red Sox face the Dodgers it will be the first time the two teams have faced one another in the World Series since 1916.

Craig Kimbrel is Dancing on Disaster's Precipice

History will credit Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel with a save in last night's 8-6 win over the Houston Astros to take a 3-1 lead in the ALCS with an opportunity to clinch the AL pennant this evening. But if not for Andrew Benintendi's game and life saving catch off the bat of Alex Bregman to end the game, the ALCS would surely be tied.

Kimbrel has been dancing on disaster's precipice this entire post-season. In four appearances, Kimbrel has given up 5 runs in 5.1 IP walking three batters and plunking two for a ghastly 8.44 ERA. Kimbrel gave me and many other New England residents a coronary episode last week after nearly forcing a Game 5 in the ALDS against the New York Yankees. He was also shaky in Game 2 of the ALCS at Fenway.

Needless to say, I was mystified when Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought in Kimbrel in the 8th inning. After all, Matt Barnes had only pitched a third of an inning and looked sharp. I thought Barnes would face at least two hitters in the 8th. Instead, Cora sent Kimbrel out to get his first ever two inning save. My mystification turned into anxiety after David Price started warming up in the bullpen after Kimbrel gave up a run on two hits and a hit batter. My anxiety turned to angina after Brian McCann came up with the tying run in the 9th after issuing back to back walks.

When Bregman came up, I reverted to superstitious behavior by moving from the sofa chair to the couch. On the next pitch, Bregman hit the ball to Benintendi. I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn't moved a moment before.

Chances are the Red Sox will win the AL pennant. But if they do as long as Cora sticks with Kimbrel and he doesn't regain his form sooner or later the Red Sox will fall off the precipice resulting in a World Series title for either the Dodgers or Brewers.

Why Did Elizabeth Warren Take Trump's Bait & Take a DNA Test?

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren's DNA test which demonstrated she has Native American ancestry has generated anger among prominent Native Americans, has generated discussion that having such ancestry doesn't make her Native American and has reminded people that she may have erroneously benefited from making such claims in regard to her previous employment at Harvard University.

So why did she take a DNA test? Because President Trump challenged her to do so back in July and said if she could prove her claims he would donate $1 million to charity.

And she took the bait. But why? What was there to be gained from doing so? Did she think Trump would keep his end of the bargain? Of course he denied ever making such an offer despite all evidence to the contrary. And it doesn't matter because now Warren has been hooked and she is gasping for air and being throttled about by all sides of the political spectrum.

Advice to anyone who seeks to challenge President Trump - don't play on his terms because you will lose. The Democrat nominee must set the terms of the debate which ensures the maximization of his or her strengths while exploiting Trump's weaknesses. This is, of course, far easier said than done.

Somehow I don't think Elizabeth Warren is going to adapt to this jungle. Should Democrats choose to nominate her then I think Trump is going to wipe the floor with her, rub her face in it and enjoy every second of it.

Trump is Probably Glad Saudi Arabia Murdered a Journalist

The disappearance and likely murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey has created a global political crisis compounded by the Trump Administration's apparent indifference to this act. Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times speculates this indifference may be as a result of Trump's business ties to the House of Saud:

We need an international investigation, perhaps overseen by the United Nations, of what happened to Jamal. In the United States, we also must investigate whether Saudis bought influence with spending that benefited the Trump family, such as $270,000 spent as of early 2017 by a lobbying firm for Saudi Arabia at the Trump hotel in Washington. The Washington Post reported that Saudi bookings at Trump Chicago increased 169 percent from the first half of 2016 to the first half of this year, and that the general manager of a Trump hotel in New York told investors that revenues rose partly because of “a last-minute visit to New York by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.”

While it is always prudent to follow the money there might be another reason for Trump's indifference - his contempt for the media. Let us not forget that Trump has repeatedly labelled the press "an enemy of the people." As I have asked previously, if the media is our enemy then what does that make ISIS?

In light of these events, let me now pose this question. Given that Trump has this contemptible view of the media, why would he care if another country saw fit to assassinate a journalist? After all, when Trump was reminded by Joe Scarborough of Vladimir Putin's penchant for murdering journalists in December 2015, Trump famously replied, "Well, I think that our country does plenty of killing, too, Joe."

I believe Trump admires Putin for killing journalists. I also believe Trump admires Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for evidently having done the same to Khashoggi. To Trump, this is getting things done.

With this in mind, I strongly suspect that Trump wishes he could do the same to Jim Acosta, Cecilia Vega and numerous other journalists in this country who dare to question him. I have a bad feeling that such a day might arrive soon.

Red Sox Hold Off Yankees to Advance to ALCS vs. Astros & Prevent a Heart Attack in the Process

I just about had a heart attack.

At no point was I ever comfortable with the four runs the Red Sox scored in Game 4 of the ALDS. It was paltry compared to the 16 they scored yesterday in Game 3 which included the first ever post-season cycle by Brock Holt.

I became especially uncomfortable in the 9th inning when Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel didn't have his stuff and walked Aaron Judge on four pitches followed by a Didi Gregorius single. At this point, I moved from the sofa chair to this computer. It seemed to work because Kimbrel struck out Giancarlo Stanton. But Kimbrel issued another walk to Luke Voit to load the basesand then plunked Todd Walker to cut the lead to 4-2. From the computer, I made my way to the couch. When Gary Sanchez launched it I thought there would be a Game 5 in Boston on Thursday. I would breathe a sigh of relief when Andrew Benintendi caught the ball for a sacrifice fly. That relief would be momentary as Gregorius would score. The Red Sox led by one.

It all came down to Yankees rookie Gleyber Torres. I wasn't full of encouragement when TBS broadcasters Ron Darling and Brian Anderson emphasized that Torres had hit 7 3-run home runs. Torres instead hit a sharp ground ball to Red Sox third baseman Eduardo Nunez who tossed the ball off balanced into first baseman Steve Pearce's glove. Yankees manager Aaron Boone challenged the play as Nunez was writhing in pain on the ground. The call was upheld. My coronary was averted and the Red Sox advance to the ALCS against the Houston Astros which commences Saturday night at Fenway Park.

I have been walking the streets of New York City wearing my Red Sox cap. There haven't been that many comments. I suspect this will change when I walk to work tomorrow morning. It will be worth every insult as the Red Sox play another day while the Yankees go home.

Thoughts on Nikki Haley's Resignation as UN Ambassador

Nikki Haley has announced her resignation as Ambassador to the UN effective at the end of 2018.

It's hard to know what to make of it all. Did she abruptly resign because of an ethics complaint regarding her use of private planes? After all similar troubles forced both Tom Price and Scott Pruitt to resign from HHS and the EPA, respectively.

Yet speculation abounds that President Trump is seeking to replace Jeff Sessions at AG with Lindsey Graham with Haley succeeding Graham and Ivanka Trump succeeding Haley. It would certainly explain Graham's vociferous defense of Brett Kavanaugh. But it also sounds like a strange game of four degrees of separation.

Should this come to pass however, it will certainly bolster Haley's case to be Trump's successor in 2024. A case can be made that Haley was Trump's most effective cabinet member. Of course this is like telling someone they are the nicest guy in prison. Don't get me wrong. Her vociferous support for Israel and opposition to the Iran nuclear deal was a breath of fresh air at the UN. The air however got considerably hotter when she spoke of Trump's honesty following his rambling performance at the UN General Assembly last month which earned him derisive laughter. Contrary to Jennifer Rubin's wishes, Haley will not be challenging Trump in 2020 or at anytime ever. Whatever skepticism she might have had during the 2016 campaign, Haley is forever tethered to Trump for better or for worse.

Former Astronaut Scott Kelly Apologizes For Quoting Churchill

Former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has apologized for quoting Winston Churchill.

Kelly received backlash after quoting Churchill following the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. "One of the greatest leaders of modern times, Sir Winston Churchill said, “in victory, magnanimity.” I guess those days are over," tweeted Kelly.

Upon said backlash, Kelly sent out another tweet:

Did not mean to offend by quoting Churchill. My apologies. I will go and educate myself further on his atrocities, racist views which I do not support. My point was we need to come together as one nation. We are all Americans. That should transcend partisan politics.

Atrocities? You mean like stand up to and defeating Hitler?

But there are those on the Left such as British academic Kehinde Andrews who not only calls Churchill a racist but considers him at the root of the problem

And what of Jeremy Corbyn's anti-Semitism? Well, not so much.

The Left seeks to delegitimize figures it deems impure and we give up without so much as a fight.

Dodgers Eliminate Braves; Advance to 3rd Straight NLCS

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 in Game 4 of the NLDS to advance to their third straight NLCS and fourth in six years. The Dodgers got critical hits from 2011 World Series hero David Freese who hit the go ahead two run single in the sixth and a three run home run by Manny Machado the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Dodgers will travel to Milwaukee where they will face the Brewers in the NLCS on Friday night.

The Dodgers dominated the Braves in Games 1 & 2 shutting down the Braves offense in both games. The Braves finally got on the board in Game 3 with five runs in the second inning only for the Dodgers to tie the game soon after. But the Braves persevered and Freddie Freeman went deep to keep the Braves hopes alive. Alas the Braves could not extend the series to a fifth and deciding game. No shame for the Braves though. No one expected them to reach the post-season this year and they have given fans something to look forward to in 2019.

The Dodgers will seek to win back to back NL pennants; something no NL team has done since the Braves pulled it off in 1995 and 1996. However, the Brewers will have a great deal to say about whether they accomplish that or not.

Astros Sweep Tribe; Cleveland Fans Will Wait Yet Another Year

The Houston Astros have swept the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS with a convincing 11-3 victory in Game 3 highlighted by a six run 8th inning. Astros outfielder George Springer hit two home runs with both Carlos Correa and Marwin Gonzalez each driving in three runs.

The Astros advance to the ALCS, but will have a long layoff and will probably not know where they will play Game 1 which is scheduled to begin Saturday. The defending World Series champions will either host the Yankees or they will travel to Boston. Either way the Astros are at the distinct disadvantage should the Red Sox-Yankees series go to five games. That series is currently tied at 1-1 with Game 3 scheduled to take place tonight at Yankee Stadium.

Of course, one would much rather be unsure of where one plays than not to be able to play at all. Once again, Indians' fans will have to wait until next year to end their World Series drought. The Tribe last won the World Series in 1948. They came oh so close in 2016 taking the Chicago Cubs to extra innings in Game 7 before the Cubs ended their 108 year drought. Needless to say, Cubs fans have little sympathy for the Indians' now 71-year drought.

As for the Astros, they are hoping to become the first team to win consecutive World Series titles since the Yankees won three straight between 1998 through 2000. But they will have to get through either the Yankees or Red Sox first. One step at a time.

Brewers Sweep Rockies; Advance to NLCS

The Milwaukee Brewers have just defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-0 at Coors Field to sweep the NLDS. When back up catcher Erik Kratz goes 6 for 9 and Orlando Arcia and Keon Broxton (who had seven HR between them this season) go back to back off Wade Davis you know the Brewers are playing on all eight cylinders.

After the Rockies beat the Cubs in dramatic fashion over 13 innings at Wrigley Field six days ago, there was a let down. The Rockies only scored two runs in the entire series when they tied the game in the 9th inning forcing extra innings in Game 1. Apart from that, the Brewers outplayed the Rockies and will host Game 1 of the NLCS come Friday night. The Brewers could find out who their opponents are in a few hours should the Dodgers win Game of their NLDS against the Braves. While the Brewers held the Rockies to two runs, the Dodgers have held the Braves to no runs during the first two games. But the Braves might have other plans as they host Game 3. Regardless of the outcome, the Brewers will play in their first NLCS since 2011 to fight for the chance to play in their first World Series since 1982 when they were an American League team.

Will Someone Try to Kill Kavanaugh?

With yesterday's confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and the outpouring of anger in the Senate chamber upon his confirmation, I cannot help but think someone is going to try to take matters into their own hands.

As I have stated previously, I don't know if Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape Susan Blasey Ford and none of us know with the exception of Kavanaugh, Ford and Mark Judge. But plenty of people have made up their mind that Kavanaugh is guilty of attempted rape, has gotten away with it and now has a lifetime sinecure on the Supreme Court. Thus it would come as no surprise to me if someone, perhaps a rape survivor or the parent or spouse of a rape survivor tried to kill Kavanaugh. Combine the hyper-partisan anger in our politics, the demagogic tendencies of both President Trump and the #MeToo movement and the misguided desire for plain old revenge and you have all the ingredients for a political assassination.

Let us not forget that it was just over a year ago that a gunman targeted Republicans at the Congressional Baseball practice nearly killing House Majority Whip Steve Scalise. The assailant in that case was content to kill any Republican. Kavanaugh, on the other hand, has a target on his back as big as that of President Trump himself. The price Kavanaugh and his family will have to pay for being seated on the Supreme Court is round the clock security for the rest of their live. But as we well know round the clock security isn't always enough to prevent an assassination (JFK) or assassination attempt (Reagan).

Of course, it is equally possible that Senate Republicans who voted to confirm Kavanaugh might also be targets especially Susan Collins of Maine who many expected to reject Kavanaugh. In the eyes of The Left, Collins betrayed her gender. But unlike Kavanaugh, Collins is up for re-election in 2020. Hopefully their energies will be spent unseating Collins with ballots instead of bullets.

Naturally, I hope no bloodshed comes to pass against Kavanaugh, Collins or anyone else regardless of their political affiliation. But as long as Democrats and Republicans perceive each other as enemies and believe they cannot achieve their objectives by peaceful means then invariably partisans will increasingly turn towards violence. Steve Scalise and his Congressional Republican colleagues were lucky last year. Brett Kavanaugh might not be so fortunate.

Who is Kavanaugh Kidding? Conservatives Turned The SC Into a Partisan Institution

Difficult as it might be, let us put the sexual misconduct allegations against SC nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the side for the moment. Let's focus on his op-ed in The Wall Street Journal where he states, "The Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution." Kavanaugh adds that "a good judge must be an umpire - a neutral and impartial who favors no political party, litigant or policy."

Who does Kavanaugh think he is kidding? The only reason Kavanaugh was nominated, much less considered for the highest court in the land is because of partisanship.

One only need consider this article in The Federalist by Clark Hildabrand written after Anthony Kennedy's retirement listing his 10 most likely successors. Hildabrand begins his article by stating President Trump "will no doubt endeavor to select someone in the conservative vein of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas."

When writing of Kavanaugh, Hildabrand characterizes him as "a reliable neoconservative vote on the D.C. Circuit" while cautioning "the major concern with Kavanaugh is whether he will drift left on social policy as Kennedy did."

Conservative vein? Neo-conservative? Drift left? Kavanaugh isn't exactly being praised for his ability to call balls and strikes, now is he?

Obviously it takes two to turn the Supreme Court into a partisan institution. Both the Left and Right are guilty of this behavior and this country is the worse for it. But while the Left wears its partisanship on its sleeve, the Right is pretending they are above partisanship when they are neck deep in it. Since Kavanaugh wants to use baseball metaphors and we are in the post-season, if Kavanaugh is calling balls and strikes then why did he swing for the fences during his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week?

Yankees Will Face Red Sox in Postseason For First Time Since 2004

The New York Yankees won their second straight AL Wild Card game with a 7-2 victory over the Oakland A's.

Unlike a year ago, Yankees starter Luis Severino was effectively. Although he went only four plus innings he didn't surrender a run and struck out seven.

A's manager Bob Melvin's decision to go with an opener didn't pay off as Aaron Judge took Liam Hendriks' deep in the first inning with a two run HR. Although Lou Trivino was effective pitching three scoreless innings, the same could not be said for either Fernando Rodney nor A's closer Blake Treinen who each gave up two runs in the sixth with Luke Voit's two run triple giving the Yankees a 6-0 lead. The A's only offense came on a two run home run by Khris Davis in the eighth inning but this was offset by a cannon shot by Giancarlo Stanton in the bottom of the inning.

As the game wore on Yankees fans chanted, "We Want Boston!!! We Want Boston!!!"

Yankees fans might be careful for what they wish.

The Yankees will face the Red Sox in the post-season for the first time since 2004 when Boston came back from being down 0-3 in the ALCS. The ALDS begins on Friday night at Fenway Park.

It is fitting this match up should take place a fortnight after moving here from Boston. I am strongly tempted to wear my Red Sox hat as I work to and from work for the duration of the ALDS. I might want to be careful for what I wish.

Orioles Dismiss Showalter Following Club Worse 115 Losses

The Baltimore Orioles have fired manager Buck Showalter after the team's abysmal 47-115 season in which they finished 61 games back of the Boston Red Sox. They weren't quite the 1962 New York Mets, but they came very close. Even the St. Louis Browns were never this bad. To give you an idea of just how bad the Orioles were, the Blue Jays finished 26 games ahead of the O's. Not that it counted for much because they fired their manager too.

Showalter had been at the helm of the team since 2011 and guided them to three post-season appearances earning AL Wild Card berths in 2012 and 2016 and the AL East in 2014. But this year everything just fell apart.

Well, I suppose the Orioles have nowhere to go but up. But the question is how far up and how long?

Why Trump Will Get Away With Mocking Ford

It should come as no surprise to anyone that President Trump publicly ridiculed Christine Blaney Ford at a political rally in Mississippi last night. This is his stock and trade.

If any other President were skeptical of Ford's accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, he would have kept that skepticism to himself. Certainly no other President would have attacked Ford's character. But Trump isn't like any other President. Remember this is a man who ridiculed a Gold Star mother without consequence. Trump isn't going to modify his behavior. There is a segment of the population which loves this "quality" of Trump and supports him because of it.

But there is something else. Like any other demagogue, Trump inserts a kernel of truth such as when he stated, "I think that it's a very scary time for young men in America when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of." While such a statement might appall the #MeToo movement, it resonates with many families. Can you say the Duke Lacrosse team? Many in the #MeToo movement are out for blood and have no more regard for the truth than Trump does.

The only people who know what happened between Christine Blaney Ford and Brett Kavanaugh are Ford, Kavanaugh and Mark Judge. FBI investigation or not, we will never get to the truth of the matter and nothing good can come of it. Those who see fit to politicize sexual assault will be rewarded with the re-election of President Trump.

Tony Wolters Will Never Have to Buy a Meal in Colorado Ever Again

Wow!!! What a NL Wild Card game. I did not expect that result nor did the North Side of Chicago.

Colorado Rockies backup catcher Tony Walters, a .170 hitter, will never have to buy another meal in Colorado ever again after delivering the go ahead hit in the top of the 13th inning to give the Rockies a 2-1 victory.

This game had everything - strong starting pitching from Jon Lester and Kyle Freeland, balls stuck in the ivy, a hug near third base, a batter with leg cramps and an umpire who got hit with a pitch instead of the batter. Of course, it ended with the unlikeliest of heroes. I know I'm not doing this game justice, but it's nearly 1:30 a.m. and I have to get to bed and be up in five hours. Let's just say the Cubs and Rockies are both worthy teams and they have set the bar high.

I didn't think the Rockies could travel from L.A. to Chicago and win a game, but they did. Now they have a far shorter trip to Milwaukee where they will take on the Brewers in the NLDS commencing Thursday.

Provincial Elections in New Brunswick & Quebec Make Canada Anything But Boring

Rosemary Barton, a journalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, recently boasted on Twitter about Canada being a boring country in response to President Trump's recent press conference during last week's UN General Assembly.

But in the space of the past week, Canada has witnessed two provincial elections which demonstrate otherwise. Significantly both elections took place in provinces with significant Francophone populations - New Brunswick and Quebec.

Actually, things have been interesting in New Brunswick for most of this decade. In most provinces, a party rules for two or more terms before the electorate gets tired. But last week's vote could prove to be the fourth straight election in which there has been a change in government. In the 2006 provincial election, the Liberals led by Shawn Graham ousted the two term incumbent Tory government led by Bernard Lord. In the 2010 election, Graham's Liberals were ousted by the Tories who were led by David Alward. In the 2014 election, Alward's Tories were tossed in favor of the Liberals who were led by Brian Gallant. There's a good chance that Gallant will face the same fate as Graham and Alward as the Tories now led by Blaine Higgs won the most the seats in the New Brunswick legislature, but not enough for a majority.

Holding the balance of power are two smaller parties - the Greens led by David Coon and the right-wing populist People's Alliance led by Kris Austin. Both the Greens and the Populist Alliance each won three seats in the New Brunswick legislature. Both the Liberals and Tories are courting the Greens who may enjoy the kind of influence they currently have across the country in British Columbia. In the 2017 election while the NDP won fewer seats than the incumbent Liberals the NDP was able to end 16 years of Liberal rule with the help of the Greens who agreed to support the NDP for the duration of their four year term although they do not hold any cabinet posts as coalition governments in Canada are rare.

The wild card here is the People's Alliance. The Liberals have explicitly ruled out any agreement with the People's Alliance because of their stance against bilingualism. The People's Alliance has pledged its support to the Tories but Higgs is keeping his distance from them for now and see if he can make a deal with the Greens. In any case, I think the Tories have the upper hand at the moment and will likely prevail. But even if they do they will have to govern an electorate every bit as volatile as one can find in this country.

Then came last night in Quebec. A new political party, Coalition Avenir Quebec won a majority government ousting the Liberals who endured their worst election results in the province in more than 150 years. Coalition Avenir Quebec becomes the first conservative party to govern Quebec since the Union Nationale was ousted from power in 1970. They are led by a multi-millionaire named Francois Legault. Could he be Quebec's Donald Trump? Not quite. Legault was actually a former Parti Quebecois cabinet minister in the late 1990's and early 2000's. His old party which nearly a quarter century ago realized its dream of an independent Quebec was reduced to 9 seats and supplanted by the far left Quebec Solidaire.

While the CAQ is nationalist, they vow to never hold another Quebec referendum. Unlike the Union Nationale who under the iron fist of Maurice Duplessis emphasized its ties with the Catholic Church, the CAQ emphasizes secularism and opposes Muslims who wear the hijab and favors limiting immigration. Last night's election was Quebec's most significant since Rene Levesque and the PQ came to power in 1976. The common denominator in both elections is that there was a man named Trudeau living at 24 Sussex Drive.

Canadian politics are anything but boring.

Twins Fire Molitor; Could The Blue Jays Be Interested?

The Minnesota Twins have fired manager Paul Molitor after four seasons at the helm and with two years remaining on his contract. In 2017, Molitor guided the Twins to an AL Wild Card berth. The Twins had another second place finish in the AL Central in 2018 but had a mediocre 78-84 record and were a distant 13 games back of the Cleveland Indians.

Molitor, a native of St. Paul, has reportedly been offered another position within the Twins' organization. But perhaps Molitor might be looking further north. The Toronto Blue Jays currently have a managerial vacancy and the Hall of Famer did win a World Series title with the Jays in 1993. He would be a natural fit. Then again the Blue Jays might be looking for a younger manager and Molitor is six years older than John Gibbons who was terminated at the end of the season with a year remaining on his contract.

But Blue Jays fans have fond memories of Molitor and I suspect would embrace him as the team's new skipper. Yet memories is probably not want Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins is seeking. One can only hope he has an open mind on the subject.

Dodgers Win 6th Straight NL West Title; Rockies Head to Wrigley

The Los Angeles Dodgers have just won their sixth straight NL West title with a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium in Game 163.

The Dodgers got a pair of two run home runs from Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy in the 4th and 5th innings, respectively. Walker Buehler, who pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, also drove in a run with a single in the 6th. The Rockies did give Dodgers fans a scare in the 9th when closer Kenley Jansen gave up back to back HRs to Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story. But after a visit from longtime pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, Jansen settled down and retired the next three hitters, two by strikeout. The Dodgers advance to the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves which commences Friday.

Meanwhile, the Rockies must travel to Chicago to play the Cubs for their second straight NL Wild Card game. Last year, the Rockies were eliminated by the Arizona Diamondbacks. This may prove to be a long flight to Chicago and an even longer flight back to Denver.

Brewers Win 1st NL Central Title Since 2011; Cubs Host NL Wild Card Tomorrow

The Milwaukee Brewers have defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-1 to win their first NL Central title since 2011. Brew Crew pitching limited the Cubs to three hits with their lone run coming on Anthony Rizzo's solo HR in the fifth. The Brewers scored on singles by Christian Yelich in the 3rd while Lorenzo Cain broke the 1-1 tie in the 8th with a single with Ryan Braun providing insurance with another single.

This means the Cubs will live to fight another day but perhaps no more than that. Tomorrow night they host the NL Wild Card game against the loser of the Colorado Rockies/Los Angeles Dodgers contest which begins at this hour. Should the Cubs prevail they will once again face the Brewers in the NLDS.

It has been a most remarkable 30 days for the Brewers who began September in third place in the NL Central. But the Brewers got hot at the right time winning their final 8 games and 10 of their last 11. Since September 1st, the Brewers are 20-7. Nevertheless should the Brewers face either the Cubs or Dodgers in the NLDS they will be perceived as the underdog. I suspect that will be just fine with them.
