Today, the United States recorded its 24 millionth case of COVID-19. According to Johns Hopkins University there have been 24,062,465 cases of COVID-19 in the United States. By tomorrow, on Donald Trump's last full day in office as President of the United States, the death toll should hit 400,000. At present, the death toll is 398,879. The mortality rate remains at 1.7%.
It has taken less than two months from the number of U.S. COVID-19 cases to double. We hit the 12 million mark on November 21, 2020. Fifty eight days later we stand at over 24 million. It took 10 months to record the first 12 million cases and less than two months to record the next 12 million cases. During this same time period nearly 145,000 Americans have died of COVID-19. So much for all that winning.
Complicating matters are the different strains of COVID-19 which have emerged in the U.K., South Africa and Brazil. While they aren't necessarily more fatal they do spread more rapidly and not rapidly enough to immunize people with vaccines.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have enough to worry about where it concerns the mess Trump left with his handling of COVID-19. They also must contend with Trump supporters who would like to see them dead before they can take the oath of office. God help us.
