Many Americans struggled to understand why an enemy would hate us with such zeal. The security measures incorporated into our lives are both sources of comfort and reminders of our vulnerability and we have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gathers within.
There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But in their disdain for pluralism, disregard for human life. In their determination to defile national symbols they are children of the same foul spirit and it is our continuing duty to confront them.
Of course, Bush did not mention the 1/6 insurrectionists by name but right-wing Twitter heard him loud and clear and they did not like it one bit.
I say let them howl. While the death toll on 1/6 was miniscule by comparison there was an attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and it is very likely only the beginning. As freshman Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn said scarcely a fortnight ago, "Because, you know, if our election systems continue to be rigged and continue to be stolen, then it’s going to lead to one place — and it’s bloodshed." In other words, unless things go our way we're going to kill our fellow Americans. So long as Trump supporters are prepared to embrace lethal means of violence like al Qaeda terrorists then Bush is correct to say they are "children of the same foul spirit." And it is up to the adults to confront them and put an end to their evil ways.
