I was shocked to learn of the death of comedian Norm Macdonald. Then again he kept the cancer he had been battling for a decade a secret would be in for a shock. His older brother Neil Macdonald, a journalist with the CBC, indicated that he had been diagnosed with leukemia. Perhaps most shocking of all he was only 61.
Best known for his tenure on SNL during the 1990's most notably as the Weekend Anchor who would remind us how Germans loved David Hasselhoff, the Canadian born Macdonald also starred the ABC sitcom The Norm Show and would later host the podcasts Norm Macdonald Live and Norm Macdonald Has a Show.
Macdonald was known for his dry, acerbic wit and seldom talked about himself. A rare exception took place when he was the last comedian to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman when Macdonald held back tears to convey his appreciation for Letterman from the time he saw him do standup comedy as a teenager in Toronto. Letterman kindly returned the sentiment. And now its our turn. R.I.P.
