No Government Shutdown But Debt Ceiling Crisis Remains

The federal government won't be shutdown - for now. Congress passed a measure to keep the government funded through December 3rd.

But the measure only passed when Democrats dropped demands to raise the debt ceiling. However, they'll have to pick up this demand very soon because the federal government will have to raise it by October 18th. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said that if Congress fails to act to raise the debt ceiling by that time then the U.S. will default on the debt and effectively be rendered unable to borrow.

Republicans were perfectly happy to lift the debt ceiling when President Trump was in office and when they were in control of Congress. But now that Joe Biden is in the White House and the Democrats control Congress they won't lift a finger even if means causing a recession. Like I said last night, while Democrats are mostly stupid most Republicans are just evil. If Republicans are unwilling to accept the peaceful transfer of power what is to stop them from defaulting on the debt so they can blame Democrats for spending under GOP controlled Congresses?

Oh yeah, we're still in a goddamn pandemic that has killed nearly 700,000 Americans. If mass deaths don't move Republicans people losing their jobs and their livelihoods (yet again) sure as hell won't either.

Of course, the debt ceiling could be lifted at the last minute. But why put us through all the agony and uncertainty? Again because most Republicans are evil and just don't give a shit about you and me.
