While still in the midst of a never ending pandemic which has killed nearly 700,000 Americans, neither Democrats nor Republicans are doing much to inspire confidence.
Democratic Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Krysten Sinema of Arizona oppose the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package due to the price tag but are unwilling to offer a solution of their own. The equally foolish Bernie Sanders is calling upon House Democrats to oppose the $1.5 trillion infrastructure spending bill that he supported unless they also support the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package. A classic case of the perfect being the enemy of the good. In this regard, Democrats are utterly stupid. Yeah, I know Bernie isn't technically a Democrat but he ran for the party's presidential nomination twice so he's a Democrat in practice.
What makes the Democrats' stupidity worse is the banal evil of the Republicans as exemplified by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's refusal to lift or suspend the debt ceiling - something he has voted for many times in the past. McConnell demands Democrats lift the debt ceiling on their own and then blocks them when they try. Indeed, McConnell is prepared to default on the debt. Had any Democrat even entertained the idea of defaulting on the debt during my Tea Parties day there would be calls of impeachment and treason.
McConnell insists there will be no default on the debt. He also insisted there would be a peaceful transfer of power between the Trump and Biden Administrations. So forgive me if I'm not assuaged by McConnell's assurances. If Republicans are prepared to turn their back on democracy then why wouldn't they turn their backs on our debt?
This isn't to say there won't be a deal. But if the deaths of nearly 700,000 Americans wasn't enough for Republicans to support a stimulus plan that would disseminate vaccines and provide relief to millions then what makes anyone think Republicans care about default on our debt? At this point, Republicans don't care who gets hurt or who else has to die so long as they have power and can keep it. This and their worship of Donald Trump makes them evil.
So is there a difference between stupid Democrats and evil Republicans? Yes there is. You can fix stupid, but you cannot fix evil.
