House Democrats are currently trying to pass a stopgap measure to keep the federal government afloat since Republicans refuse to help.
The measure was to have included $1 billion for Israel's Iron Dome but AOC and other so-called progressive Democrats like Betty McCollum, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, Pramilla Jayapal and Ayanna Pressley brought pressure to bear to remove from the bill and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave in.
Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Yair Lapid promptly contacted House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer who assured Lapid this was a "technical postponement" and that the aid will be allocated either through the annual Defense Appropriations bill or as a standalone measure.
A number of moderate Democrats took issue with AOC and company's maneuvering such as New York Congressman Ritchie Torres, Florida Congresswoman Val Demings and Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin. For her part, Slotkin said the measure was nothing more than "the desire to attack something - anything - related to the State of Israel; it’s devoid of substance and irresponsible."
Israel will get the money it needs for the Iron Dome. But the measures taken by AOC and company and the capitulation by Speaker Pelosi in the short term benefit Hamas and encourage more violence against Israeli civilians.
