A week after surpassing 40 million COVID-19 cases, the U.S. has added more than a million new cases. According to Johns Hopkins University, there have been 41,209,851 COVID-19 cases resulting in 661,537 cases representing a mortality rate of 1.6%.
In the interim, President Biden has initiated a vaccine mandate while Republican Governors like Ron DeSantis of Florida promotes vaccine disinformation. This morning, DeSantis held a press conference decrying Biden's vaccine mandate while allowing a city employee from Gainesville falsely claim that vaccines change one's RNA.
By knowingly presenting false information as fact, DeSantis is discouraging vaccinations while encouraging the spread of COVID. This is hardly surprising from a Governor with presidential ambitions who last week claimed that getting vaccinated "doesn't impact me or anyone else."It should come as no surprise that of the 1 million cases recorded last week, more than 100,000 came out of Florida along with nearly 2,500 deaths. Unfortunately, there will be far more of that to come from Florida, Texas and other Republican states which discourage vaccinations and promote vaccine misinformation.
