Of Course Trump Supporters Want More Audits

Nearly half a year after Republicans in the Arizona Senate commissioned Cyber Ninjas to do a forensic audit of votes cast in Maricopa County, the pro-Trump organization actually tabulated a slightly greater margin of victory for President Biden. 

In a rational universe, Trump supporters would be chastened, go away quietly and, for God's sake, get vaccinated. But the word rational does not describe Trump supporters. Now Trump supporters are demanding more audits in Arizona. Former President Trump demanded an audit of four counties won by Democrats in Texas and Governor Greg Abbott asked, "How high?"

Several lawsuits have also been filed in various counties in Washington state regarding claims that voting machines flipped votes from Trump to Biden. Kim Wyman, Washington's Secretary of State (and a Republican to boot) stated:

This is the new reality on the ground for election administrators. It doesn’t matter how wide a margin in the results. You call everything into question and it undermines the validity of everything in the process.

This sums up it succinctly. Of course, Trump supporters want more audits. It doesn't matter if the results reaffirm Biden the winner for the 60,000th time. Trump supporters are going to scream fraud and when you have enough people repeating a fraudulent claim of fraud a significant portion of the populace believe it as fact thereby undermining our democratic form of government. Indeed, 78% of Republicans believe Biden did not win the election while more than half of all Americans believe a future election will be overturned. Mixing the acceptance of alternative facts with increased pessimism in the strength of our institutions is a recipe for American authoritarianism.  

Which is exactly what Trump supporters want. They believe Trump is entitled not only to be President but to be President for Life regardless of what a majority of Americans want. To Trump supporters, the will of the American people doesn't count unless it is to pledge allegiance to Trump.

So to sow further doubt we can expect audits of the 2020 election to continue all the way up to 2024 when Trump gets his rematch with Biden. Trump may lose to Biden yet again in 2024 but he and his supporters are counting on Republican legislatures and a Republican Congress (should one come to power in the 2022 midterms) not to certify Biden's re-election or any election won by a Democratic presidential candidate. And if that doesn't work Trump can always incite another better organized insurrection.

While Trump supporters are largely irrational, Trump knows that he is lying and that people believe his lies. So long as people give his lies oxygen then Trump has a chance to return to the White House by hook or by crook. It is the main reason why I believe there might not be an America by the time our 250th anniversary rolls around on July 4, 2026.
