Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench announced on Twitter last Friday that he had contracted COVID-19 and would not be able to attend the 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony being held later this week.
However, Bench noted that he had been vaccinated and that his doctor informed him that is what kept him out of the hospital.
The following day Bench announced his 12-year old son had been vaccinated. The Cincinnati Reds legend added, "Don’t catch Covid. I know I had the shots but I would be tweeting from hospital bed. Not my office. Thank you."
I hope Bench continues to speak out in favor of vaccinations. Perhaps his words can persuade his catching colleague Bob Boone to reconsider his position. Perhaps his words can persuade others of his generation as well as the younger generation who grew up watching him play to get vaccinated. Perhaps it is asking a lot. But I would like to think that there are some people out there whose words carry some weight.
Bench has always been an engaging communicator and he can utilize this skill to convey his personal experience of getting vaccinated and do a great deal of public good in the process.
