Former professional wrestler Daffney Unger died of an apparent suicide yesterday. Friends and former wrestling colleagues became concerned with her safety after she had posted an Instagram video where she held a small gun and said she wanted to have her brain studied for CTE. Their worst fears were realized today. Unger was 46.
I remember Unger from her days wrestling in WCW in the late 1990's and early 2000's as well as with TNA in the late 2000's and early 2010's. She had a goth look, a killer scream and could work in the ring. Sadly, injuries took their toll ending her wrestling career about a decade ago although she occasionally made appearances on the independent circuit usually as a manager. Even more sadly she appears to have become the latest in a long ling of wrestlers who have had their lives cut short by concussions.
After the awful news, many of Unger's former colleagues praised her kindness while others like Mick Foley encouraged those feeling distraught about their lives to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Did she feel she couldn't reach out? I do wonder how many of her former colleagues she was in touch with recently. Of course, it is entirely possible there were those who tried to help but the damage done had been too great. Whatever the case a young woman who shared such joy will share no more. R.I.P.
