In his final game at Dodger Stadium, Vin Scully got a wonderful send off as the Dodgers won 4-3 against the Colorado Rockies on a walk off home run by journeyman player Charlie Culberson. The home run was Culberson's first of the season and came against the team that released him. It was also the Dodgers' fourth consecutive NL West title.
Following the game, Scully thanked the fans and played a recording of him singing Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings." Under most circumstances, I would have cringed. But he sang it well. He certainly sings better than Randy Newman. And given how this day began with the awful news of Jose Fernandez's death, it was perfect way to end it. It is a reminder that we all must leave the stage whether by design or by accident. Regardless of the circumstances, the game and life must carry on.
In the spirit of carrying on, the Dodgers will face the Washington Nationals in the NLDS in October.
