The United States has officially surpassed 70 million COVID cases. According to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, there have been 70,209,352 cases resulting in 864,553 deaths representing a mortality rate of 1.2%.
In January alone (with 10 days remaining in the month) the U.S. has recorded more than 15 million new cases mainly due to the Omicron variant and has had the effect of driving down the mortality rate. However, hospitalizations due to COVID are nearing 160,000. The flip side of that is that many of these COVID hospitalizations are incidental. For instance, here in Massachusetts 49% of all patients who currently have COVID were hospitalized for other reasons. Nevertheless this does put an added strain on an already beleaguered health care system and we can expect a lot more of it.
