For the second day in a row, the United States added more than 1 million new COVID-19 cases as the Omicron variant rages through the nation. According to Johns Hopkins University, there have been 57,048,792 COVID-19 cases in this country resulting in 830,067 deaths representing a mortality rate of 1.5%.
Let me put it another way. Over the past 48 hours, the U.S. has recorded almost as many COVID cases as Canada has had during the entire pandemic. As of this writing, Canada has recorded 2,302,695 COVID cases.
Worse still, hospitalizations due to COVID have climbed back over 100,000 for the first time in four months.
Is there any good news? Last week, Dr. Fauci predicted that Omicron would peak at the end of January while other experts believe the decline could begin in the middle of the month. But even if this comes to pass who can say there won't be other variants which spread every bit as quickly and might prove to be less "mild" than Omicron?
We will have to take this one day at a time. Even if that one day means another million new COVID cases.
