After posting more than 1 million new COVID cases on Monday and Tuesday, it took two days to add another million cases to bring the total well over 58 million. According to Johns Hopkins University, there have been 58,449,898 cases resulting in 833,957 deaths.
The proliferation of cases has resulted in a decline of the mortality rate which now stands at 1.4%. It had stood at 1.6% since the end of August 2021. It fell to 1.5% on December 28th staying there for just over a week.
However, COVID hospitalizations are nearing 120,000 which means a surge of deaths will be coming by the end of January. It might not be enough to increase the mortality rate but it will be a reminder the ravages of COVID aren't going away and they aren't going to disappear like a miracle.
