For nearly two years Ukraine has fought valiantly against Russian aggression. But Ukraine is running out of ammunition and, with it, time.
President Zelensky came to Washington earlier this week to appeal for support of President Biden's aid package, but Republicans rebuffed him. Ohio GOP Senator J.D. Vance reportedly walked out of the meeting in a sign of disrespect. House Speaker Mike Johnson did not walk out on Zelensky, but he was equally indifferent to Ukraine's plight. Johnson sees a greater danger from Mexico even though they are not likely to launch rockets into the United States.
President Biden characterized Republican indifference as a "Christmas gift" to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Ditto for Hungarian President Viktor Orban whose advisers met with Republicans at the Heritage Foundation to find ways to stick it to Ukraine.
All of which is compounding the despair in Ukraine. My colleague Tatyana whom I wrote about at the outset of the war told me the other day that her sister is among many in Ukraine who think it won't be long before Russia prevails. Of course, this is psychological warfare and Republicans are aiding and abetting Russia in this regard. Republicans are bad enough where it concerns Israel, but are even worse when it comes to Ukraine.
If Republicans are abandoning Ukraine today, how long it will be before they abandon NATO should we be foolish enough to give defeated, former President Donald Trump a second chance.
