Moncton, New Brunswick will have a menorah lighting after all, thank goodness.
Last week, Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold informed the local Jewish community there would not be a menorah lighting. Arnold indicated it was a result of a 2015 Supreme Court of Canada decision. However, the reality was Moncton City Hall had been the site of pro-Hamas demonstration.
Following a public backlash, Moncton City Council (including Mayor Arnold) unanimously gave their blessing to the Menorah lighting beginning Thursday night.
I can only hope no other city government will try something like this given the reversals in Moncton and in the London Borough of Havering in the U.K.
However, I think a reversal is less likely at the 2nd Sunday Arts and Music Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia. The organizers of that festival now deny there was any cancellation at all, and that the menorah lighting had never been scheduled. Essentially, they are calling the Jewish community liars.
So much for peace and goodwill.
