Detroit Tigers General Manager Al Avila is reportedly considering hiring either Alex Cora or A.J. Hinch to be the team's new manager next season.
Both Cora and Hinch were suspended this season for their role in the Houston Astros electronic sign stealing scandal in 2017 when they won the World Series. Hinch was the Astros skipper while Cora was the Astros' third base coach and generally considered the mastermind of the scheme. Cora subsequently became the skipper of the Boston Red Sox guiding them to a World Series title in 2018.
The Tigers would be wise to stay as far away from Cora and Hinch as possible. Hiring them will draw the team unnecessary and unwanted scrutiny.
Of course, Avila is not without options. He could stick with Lloyd McClendon who succeeded Ron Gardenhire on an interim basis when Gardenhire abruptly retired last month due to health reasons. But if Avila was inclined to stick with McClendon he could have done so.
Among the other managerial candidates being considered are former Braves and Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, former Marlins manager Mike Redmond, Kansas City Royals third base coach Vance Wilson, Kansas City Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol, Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Don Kelly, New York Mets bench coach Hensley Meulens and Chicago White Sox bench coach Joe McEwing.
It seems that Meulens and McEwing are always under consideration for managerial posts. Lord knows they've paid their dues. I think the time has come for one of these baseball lifers to get a shot. Whoever the Tigers hire it should not be a someone associated with cheating and scandal.
