The Oakland A's defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-4 in the third and the deciding game of the AL Wild Card Series. This was the sixth post-season appearance in nine years for the A's under Bob Melvin, but the first time they've won a playoff series. The A's-Astros series takes on an added dimension when we consider that A's pitcher Mike Fiers blew the whistle on the Astros' electronic sign stealing scandal.
In the National League, two of the four Wild Card series have been determined. The Atlanta Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 to not only sweep them but rendered them scoreless. The Braves will face either the Miami Marlins or the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS. The Marlins currently have a 1-0 lead in the NL Wild Card Series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers also shut out the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 on the strength of a 13 strikeout performance from Clayton Kershaw. The Brewers frankly didn't belong on the same field with the Dodgers having a losing record the entire regular season. The Dodgers await the winner of the NL Wild Card Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres who are tied one game apiece.
