U.S. COVID-19 Cases Climb From 2 Million to 3 Million in Less Than a Month

The United States has now surpassed 3 million COVID-19 cases.

As of this writing, there are 3.047,671 COVID-19 cases with nearly 65,000 cases in the past 24 hours (64,771).

Less than a month ago we hit the 2 million mark. Will we reach 4 million by the end of July?

President Trump keeps claiming we have a high number of cases because we do more testing than anyone else in the world.

Nonsense.

The United States does one test for every 8.5 residents whereas Denmark does one test for every five residents. Yesterday, Denmark had a dozen cases yesterday whereas we had more than 60,000.

Let's put it another way. Since hitting the 2 million mark on June 12th our daily testing capacity has gone up 37%. Over the same period, the number of positive cases has increased by 152%. Once again you can't trust anything President Trump says.

If there is a silver lining over the past four weeks it is the number of COVID-19 deaths have slowed. When there were 2 million COVID-19 cases, the death rate was at 5.7%. It is now 4.3%. But this will probably be of cold comfort because with the recent spike of COVID-19 cases a spike of deaths will inevitably follow.

The fact is more than 132,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 over the past five months. By this time a month from now that total will reach 150,000 - possibly more. The deaths of 150,000 Americans in six months from an infectious disease with no vaccine or therapeutic in sight and with President Trump insisting on holding rallies and bent on sending children back to school does not inspire confidence or hope.
