For Bostonians, April 15th will forever mark the day of the Boston Marathon Bombing. For Parisians, April 15th will forever mark the day the Notre-Dame Cathedral was devastated by a massive fire. Its tower spire has collapsed and workers are scrambling to save what they can including priceless works of art.
The first thing I thought upon hearing the news is that it might been an intentional act of arson. I thought this given spate of Islamic terrorist attacks that have taken place in France in recent years and the violence of the Yellow Jacket movement. But the 850-year old Cathedral has fallen into disrepair and is currently being renovated. At this point, the cause appears to be accidental and there are no reports of casualties. Nevertheless, Notre-Dame Cathedral was one of the most important institutions in France and in the Catholic Church and its loss is incalculable especially with Easter approaching.
