This morning I came across this article from the Columbus Dispatch via Beau of the Fifth Column's YouTube channel. It concerns a pregnant 10-year old girl who had to travel from Ohio to Indiana to obtain an abortion because of the Buckeye's state six week abortion ban:
On Monday three days after the Supreme Court issued its groundbreaking decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist, took a call from a colleague, a child abuse doctor in Ohio.
Hours after the Supreme Court action, the Buckeye state had outlawed any abortion after six weeks. Now this doctor had a 10-year-old patient in the office who was six weeks and three days pregnant.
Could Bernard help?
Anti-abortion activists and politicians call themselves pro-life, but they could care less about the life of this 10-year old girl. She is no position to consent to sex on a legal and emotional level much less give birth and raise a child. Yet, despite these circumstances, the state of Ohio by virtue of the so-called heartbeat law would compel her to give birth or otherwise treat her as a criminal thus drawing no distinction between this 10-year old child and the man who raped and impregnated her.
In some sense this 10-year old girl is fortunate in that she was able to obtain an abortion in Indiana. But by the end of this month, this will very likely no longer be an option when a special session of the state legislature convenes and 10-year old girls in Indiana would likely have to be escorted to Illinois.
Should Americans elect a Republican Congress this November we will soon the introduction of a national abortion ban which would ensure 10-year old girls who have the misfortune of being impregnated have nowhere to go with perhaps the possible exceptions of Canada and Mexico - if they can afford it and that is a very big if. Granted President Biden would almost certainly veto such legislation. But the next time we have a Republican President and Congress this shall surely come to pass.
Far from being pro-life, anti-abortion activists and politicians are pro-cruelty to children and especially girls. Of course, in the age of Trump and Trumpism, the cruelty is the point.
