When I read that James Caan had passed away the first thought which came to mind was the hope that he died more peacefully than Sonny Corleone did in The Godfather.
Caan lived to the age of 82. To put that into perspective, Brian Piccolo succumbed to cancer at the age of 26 after an all too brief NFL career not to mention being a young husband and father and close friend of Gale Sayers as illustrated in the TV movie Brian's Song with Billy Dee Williams.
Caan's life was full of peaks and valleys, opportunities and missed opportunities (i.e. The French Connection, Superman and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) marriages and divorces, alcohol and drugs. There was some misery along the way, but James Caan lived a full life taking risks and occasionally being rewarded by playing memorable characters and was resilient enough to be working actor almost to the very end. R.I.P.
