Last week, Unilever reached an agreement with Ben & Jerry's longtime Israeli distributor to continue selling the ice cream in Israel and the West Bank. It seemed to resolve a year long struggle which began when the Vermont based company announced it would cease doing business in the West Bank.
However, yesterday Ben & Jerry's filed a lawsuit against Unilever in federal court to block the sale claiming it was done without the approval of its independent board. While a judge denied Ben & Jerry's motion to place an injunction on the sale, it has ordered Unilever to show cause why such an injunction shouldn't be granted by July 14th.
In its filing, Ben & Jerry's claimed their brand is "synonymous with social justice." In filing this lawsuit, Ben & Jerry's is demonstrating their brand is synonymous with anti-Semitism by virtue of singling out Israel while continuing to do business in the countries with authoritarian regimes like Hungary and Thailand.
If Ben & Jerry's loses this lawsuit I suspect they will appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. With every appeal, Ben & Jerry's will remind people of their anti-Semitism and irrational hatred for the only democracy in the Middle East.
