On Monday night, Oakland City Council passed a unanimous resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The Council also rejected an amendment to the resolution condemning Hamas for its murder, kidnapping and rape of Israeli and citizens from other countries.
When the amendment was introduced, a torrent of pro-Hamas and anti-Semitic commentary followed which has gone viral:
"There's not been beheadings of babies and rapings. Israel murdered their own people on October 7th."
"Calling Hamas a terrorist organization is ridiculous, racist and plays into genocidal propaganda that is flooding our media and that we should be doing everything possible to combat."
"I support the right of Palestinians to resist occupation, including through Hamas, the armed wing of the unified Palestinian resistance."
"As an Arab asking with this context to condemn Hamas is very anti-Arab racist."
"Question - Did anyone else notice that those who oppose this resolution are old white supremacists?"
So, we have denial that there have been beheadings and rape and if there was then Israel did it.
We have the argument that criticism of Hamas is racist and aligns with white supremacists. In point of fact, the white supremacists are their allies when it comes to Israel and Jews.
And we also have overt support for the Palestinian right of resistance up to and including killing Jewish civilians be they men, women or children. When that woman called Hamas "the armed wing of the unified Palestinian resistance" I remember a time when the PLO were declared "the sole legitimate representatives of the Palestinian people." Well, the organizations might change, but their objectives are the same.
California Governor Gavin Newsom replied to the pro-Hamas sentiment at the Oakland City Council meeting, declaring, “Hamas is a terrorist organization. They must be called out for what they are: evil.”
And Oakland, both its City Council and its residents, must be called out for giving aid and comfort to Hamas and its evil.
