Ron Washington, best known for managing the Texas Rangers to back-to-back AL pennants in 2010 and 2011, is returning to the AL West as the new skipper of the Los Angeles Angels.
Washington managed the Rangers for nearly eight seasons before stepping down towards the end of the 2014 season for personal reasons. In 2015 and 2016, Washington was part of the Oakland A's coaching staff. Washington had been with the A's for more than a decade prior to managing the Rangers. Since 2017, Washington has served as the third base coach for the Atlanta Braves under Brian Snitker earning a World Series ring in 2021.
Former New York Mets manager Buck Showalter (whom Washington succeeded in Texas in 2007) had expressed interest in the Angels vacancy following the dismissal of Phil Nevin. Showalter was a finalist for the job but ultimately opted for Washington.
I think Washington will bring an enthusiastic spirit to the club that has been missing for nearly a decade. The Halos have not had a winning season since 2015 and haven't been to the post-season since 2014. Washington will be the Angels' fourth manager since Mike Scioscia stepped down following the 2018 season.
