An arrest has been made in connection with the stabbing death last month of Samantha Woll, who was the President of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue.
However, Detroit Police have declined to identify the suspect at this time. Detroit Police Chief James White stated, "The details of the investigation will remain confidential at this time to ensure the integrity of the important steps that remain."
This is very peculiar.
If authorities have a suspect in custody for Woll's murder, then how does identifying the suspect compromise the integrity of the investigation?
According to law enforcement sources, the motivation for Woll's murder is a "domestic dispute" rather than anti-Semitism. When I wrote about Woll's murder last month, I was open to the possibility that it wasn't motivated by anti-Semitism and stated that Woll could have been murdered "by someone she knew who was angry with her for either personal or financial reasons." In other words, a domestic dispute.
Yet it brings me back to my question. If this is a simple domestic dispute, then why the secrecy concerning the identity of the suspect?
The only reason I can think why Detroit Police do not want to make public the name of the suspect is because the suspect might be Arab and/or Muslim. It is a matter of public knowledge that Woll was a key figure in establishing the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit. Is it possible that Woll began a personal relationship with someone she met through this organization and is the party responsible for Woll's murder? Because of it is then it would be impossible not to consider anti-Semitism to be a factor in Woll's murder and the Detroit Police know this all too well.
Of course, it is entirely possible the suspect does not fit this profile at all. But by not be forthcoming about the identity of the suspect it will invariably lead to speculation and questions as to why authorities do not wish to identify the suspect thus further eroding public confidence in the justice system. The Detroit Police ought to be transparent and inform the public forthwith as to who they believe to be responsible for the murder of Samantha Woll. There is no reason for this suspect to be tried in secrecy.
