The Boston Red Sox Have Made a Claim on The 3rd AL Wild Card Spot

Amid the triumph and the afterglow of the Boston Celtics' NBA championship, the Boston Red Sox have been playing under the radar. But that might not last for very long.

Following Sunday's 7-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the Red Sox have won 9 of their last 11 games and have supplanted the Kansas City Royals, who have now lost 11 of their last 14 games, for the 3rd AL Wild Card spot behind the Minnesota Twins and the Baltimore Orioles.

With nearly half the season over, the Red Sox are now 42-36. Although they are 9 games back of the division leading New York Yankees, they have been making their presence felt having recently taken 2 out of 3 from both the Bronx Bombers and the Philadelphia Phillies who own the best record in the NL.

While there is another three weeks before the All-Star Break with the dog days of summer to follow, the Bosox have thus far exceeded expectations for 2024 following back-to-back last place finishes in the AL East in 2022 and 2023. If the Red Sox continue to play as they have recently, they may also emerge as one of the best stories in the 2024 MLB season with a relatively unknown cast of characters which includes Enmanuel Valdez, Ceddanne Rafaela and David Hamilton.

The Red Sox end the month of June with a six game homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays who are currently in the cellar of the AL East having lost six a row before facing the San Diego Padres who have the 3rd NL Wild Card spot with a .500 record.

With that said, the Red Sox have played better away from Fenway Park with a 24-16 mark while going only 18-20 thus far when within the friendly confines. But perhaps the best is still yet to come in the shadow of the Green Monster.
