With New York City due to hit Phase 4 of reopening on July 20th, there have been reports of shunning social distancing on Steinway Street in the heart of the Astoria section of Queens.
Evidently the shunning of social distancing and eschewing of masks on Steinway Street has been going on for over a month, but only now is attention being paid. However, the NYPD has been outnumbered and heckled for their trouble.
It doesn't take much to cause a superspreader event. New York City has made so much progress in flattening the curve of COVID-19.
I know people want to enjoy the summer, but short term frills can cause long term damage.
Indeed I have been to this neighborhood pre-COVID. On several occasions in late 2019 and early 2020, I took the R train to Steinway Street and ambled down Broadway to the Astoria Bowl. I hope to do so again. But now is not the time nor the place.
