Rapper Kanye West announced he is running for President in 2020. West tweeted on the Fourth of July, "We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future."
None of this tells us how he would address a global pandemic, the worst economic catastrophe since the Great Depression and social unrest and isn't intended to do so.
West has resources as does Elon Musk who endorsed his bid. Between them a West presidential bid can be a nuisance as it would be a lifeline for President Trump who has been flailing for weeks. A write in candidacy by West could siphon off African-American votes from Joe Biden and hand Trump a second term. West has handed Trump a lifeline.
After all, West is vocal supporter of Trump and indicated his support for the President scarcely three months ago. Even as West announces his "candidacy" he has not said a negative word about President Trump.
West still has time to file as an independent candidate with the Federal Elections Commission in a number of states including Michigan (July 20th), Wisconsin and Pennsylvania (both August 1st) which Biden needs to regain for the Democratic column. A few thousand votes for West in Detroit, Milwaukee and Philadelphia could give Trump a second term.
Of course, all of this could be a joke. Whether it is or not his campaign is a waste of time. As it stands we have one self-indulgent, unserious, vain President of the United States. We do not need another.
