When San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey announced he would skip the 2020 MLB season, I noted that all 11 MLB players who had announced they would not play this season because of COVID-19 concerns were in the NL.
This changed when Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech announced he wouldn't pitch this season. Kopech, 24, did not pitch in 2019 due to Tommy John surgery. A first round draft pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2014, the Chisox acquired Kopech from the Red Sox prior to the 2017 season in the Chris Sale deal. Kopech made his MLB debut with the White Sox in 2018 making four appearances before his injury.
Kopech did not specify his reasons for opting out, but it is worth noting that his teammates Yoan Moncada and Jose Ruiz were put on the IL for unspecified reasons. As such it is being speculated that Moncada and Ruiz have tested positive for COVID-19. In which case, it might explain Kopech's decision. In which case, it will be interesting to see if other members of the Chisox will follow Kopech's lead.
