I caught most of President Trump's Mount Rushmore speech on Friday evening. Even though more than 100,000 have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past 48 hours including his own future daughter in law, he scarcely made any mention of the disease that has killed nearly 130,000 Americans since February.
The focus of the speech was protecting monuments. Now I do not believe Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt should be removed from Mount Rushmore nor do I care for those who cannot and will not distinguish between those who preserved slavery and those who ended it. But to make this argument before a crammed crowd of 7,500 most of whom weren't wearing masks is the height of foolishness, irresponsibility and self-aggrandizement. While Trump did thank "the doctors, nurses, and scientists working tirelessly to kill the virus" he otherwise acted as if the Coronavirus had just "magically disappeared". Consider this passage from the speech:
Make no mistake. This left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution. In so doing they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger, and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery, and progress. To make this possible, they are determined to tear down every statue, symbol, and memory of our national heritage.
It seems to me that Trump is doing a bang up job of impeding a civilization from saving the lives of nearly 130,000 Americans from the most infectious disease this country has ever known. The foolishness of the left-wing cultural revolution pales in comparison to the recklessness and vanity of a President hosting events guaranteed to escalate COVID-19. Try as he might he cannot and will not tie the left-wing cultural revolution to Joe Biden.
One can only hope the madness will stop four months from today. If it does then perhaps we can truly celebrate America's birthday in 2021.
