St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks has become the 13th MLB player to opt out of the 2020 season which is scheduled to commence in 9 days from now.
Hicks, 23, has Type 1 diabetes which would make him vulnerable to COVID-19.
A 3rd round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2015, the Texas born Hicks made the big league club in 2018 and started out last season as the team's closer. Hicks saved 14 games until he tore his UCL in his pitching elbow in June that would require Tommy John surgery. Even if Hicks had opted to play it isn't clear if he would have been ready to pitch as there is 12-15 month recovery period. Hicks' fastball has been clocked at 105 MPH.
I am surprised more players have not opted out, but this could accelerate in the coming days.
