Who is Running The Show on Syria in The Trump Administration?

I am even more confused than I was four days after President Trump ordered missile strikes in Syria.

Who in the Trump Administration is running the show on Syria? On one hand, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says there is no change in Administration policy towards Syria. On the other, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley & National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster suggest that peace in Syria is not possible as long as Assad remains in power. Well, whoever's running the show, it sure ain't Trump.

I'm sure Trump supporters will say its good to keep Syria and by extension Russia and Iran guessing. Except that I think Trump is guessing too. As I write this, it is quite possible that Trump thinks Assad should go. By this time tomorrow, Trump will think that he must stay. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump changes his mind several times between now and Friday.

It is fair to say that President Trump has no good choices available to him. Leave Assad in power and he will be sure to kill thousands of more people. Maybe he'll even use chemical weapons again. Remove Assad from power and ISIS is sure to fill the vacuum. If ISIS can do the sort of damage they did to Coptic churches in Egypt over the weekend I shudder at the thought what they could do Christians if they were to control all of Syria.

But I'm not feeling sorry for Trump. He wanted the job. He said he was better than anyone else. How often during the presidential campaign did Trump tell us our leadership is stupid? Remember when Trump said that anyone who didn't want a warmer relationship with Russia was stupid? So what does that make him now?

  1. Maybe Prez Trump has finally realized that being Putin's "useful idiot" only makes him look more like his predecessor?
