One notable theme from the list is the exceeding popularity of Republican governors in blue states. The top-ten governors on the list are all Republicans, four of whom are from typically Democratic states: Baker, as well as Larry Hogan in Maryland, Phil Scott in Vermont, and Brian Sandoval in Nevada.
The Republican Governors Association ought to be pleased, as these results indicate the group has done an excellent job of finding Republican politicians appealing enough to be elected and remain popular in traditionally blue states.
There is one reason I can think that all four of these governors are enormously popular in their states - none of them can abide President Trump and his policies.
Shortly after Trump took office, Governor Sandoval poured cold water on the proposed wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Governor Baker publicly opposed Trump's immigration & refugee travel ban with Governor Scott going further in vowing to defy it. Meanwhile, Governor Hogan prefers the silent treatment.
This should give the RGA pause. Perhaps the popularity of these governors should be a message for other GOP Governors to be willing to stand up to President Trump.
