On Saturday night, I went to the Brattle Theatre to see a 25th anniversary screening of Wes Anderson's Rushmore starring Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and Olivia Williams.
I had never seen Rushmore before, so I figured now was as a good a time as any. What made the screening unusual was that only one of their projectors was working. As a result, when a reel finished the screen would go black and it would take a couple of minutes for the projectionist to add the new reel. It made for an interesting format as people would talk in between reels as if it were a brief intermission.
The reel would last 20 minutes so this happened during the film five times. During the fourth change, the projectionist made some kind of mistake and as a result the reel we had just watch began playing in reverse. So the movements and dialogue were all backwards. It took a good minute for the projectionist to realize that something was amiss. When the screen went black it resulted in the loudest applause of the night.
While Rushmore was a good movie, it was this unusual way of viewing it which made it memorable.
