Three Possible Profiles of The Mail Bomb Culprit

I touched on this a little yesterday, but would like to take a moment to figure out the profile of the person or persons responsible for sending mail bombs to prominent Democrats and to CNN.


The first possibility is that the person in question is a Trump supporter who truly believes Donald Trump's rhetoric about Democrats being a mob and views the media as an enemy of the people and wants to put those views in action. If this turns out to be the case then it will be the legacy of Trump's presidency whether he likes it or not.


The second possibility is that the person in question is a left-wing activist masquerading as a Trump supporter. The likes of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter subscribe to this school of thought. While nothing is beyond the realm of possibility, if it is a member of the "Resistance" they are going to an awful of trouble at the risk not only irrevocably undermining their movement, but strengthening Trump in the process.


The third possibility is that the person in question is acting at the behest of a foreign entity hostile to the United States, be it a nation state like Russia or China or a terrorist organization like ISIS or al Qaeda. Sowing discord in the United States is beneficial to an adversary as was the case with Russia in the 2016 election. If it's possible to plant fake news stories then why not orchestrate a terrorist attack in which one side of the political divide attacks or attempts to attack the other. If its an Islamist terrorist organization it would represent an evolution in tactics. Whereas the 9/11 attacks and the Boston Marathon bombings brought Americans together for a time, this kind of attack entrenches existing divides.


Assuming it turns out to be one of the three scenarios described above, there will always be a segment of the population which doesn't accept the verdict. If it's a Trump supporter then Trump supporters will say fake news. If it's someone on The Left they will call it a cover up for the Trump Administration. If it's foreign actor then we will have a little of columns A & B with little chance for the unity necessary to overcome a hostile external power. In which case, the United States position in the world will diminish that much more.
