In the wake of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, Republicans wasted no time in laying blame on President Biden.
It began with Georgia Republican Congressman Mike Collins claiming on X, "Joe Biden sent the orders."
Collins' comment was in response to President Biden stating six days ago, "We're done talking about the debate, it's time to put Trump in a bullseye."
This is, of course, sheer rubbish. President Biden no more caused the assassination attempt of Trump with his bullseye comment than Sarah Palin's crosshairs ad caused the assassination attempt of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in January 2011.
But as I pointed out when writing about the assassination attempt on Trump that we are not living in an age of reason. The House Judiciary Committee and Congresswoman Lauren Boebert echoed Collins' sentiments.
Even more specious is Ohio's junior Senator J.D. Vance who could very well be named as Trump's running mate tomorrow. Vance claimed on X:
Today is not just some isolated incident.
The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.
That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.
Again, more rubbish.
In the unlikely event Vance does have evidence to this effect then he ought to share it with the FBI.
The fact is we don't know what motivated 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican and gun aficionado, to make an attempt on Trump's life and neither does Vance.
Hell, we don't even know how long Crooks had been planning to assassinate Trump much less why he tried to do so.
But the facts be damned!!! Republicans are going to run with this at full speed and I shudder to think what Trump will have to say when he accepts the GOP nomination at the Republican National Convention this Thursday.
If Trump does accuse President Biden of being responsible for his assassination attempt, then will Democrats cease their efforts to ask Biden to leave the ticket and rally around him?
I certainly hope so. Because if Trump accuses Biden of being responsible for his attempted assassination and Democrats sit on their hands then it is truly over for the President. It would also represent a triumph of demagoguery over democracy.
None of this would bode well for the country.
