Earlier this evening, an assassination attempt was made on former President Donald Trump shortly after he began speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump was escorted off the stage with blood on his right ear. I was watching David Pakman's podcast and he relayed reports that Trump had been grazed by a bullet, but then subsequently relayed additional reports that his injuries were a result of a bullet hitting his teleprompter with the glass projectile cutting him. Whatever the circumstances, Trump will survive his injuries.
Others are not so fortunate as one rally attendee was killed and another seriously injured. The shooter, who evidently was a rooftop sniper from outside the rally, was shot and killed. As of this writing, the shooter has not been identified.
Of course, this will not prevent fevered speculation. Pakman noted that an NPR reporter at a rally indicated attendees pointed the finger at her and blamed the media for the attempt on Trump's life. However, many of the commenters on Pakman's podcast were no better claiming the assassination was a false flag operation which Pakman was quick to condemn. Suffice it to say, I don't accept either premise. The former is just rubbish while the latter gives Trump and those in his orbit too much credit by half.
As much as contempt as I have for former President Trump and his behavior both inside and outside of the White House, I prefer that he be defeated by ballots instead of bullets. It is wrong to try to kill Trump just as it was wrong for January 6th insurrectionists to shout, "Hang Mike Pence!!!" - an assessment with which Trump concurred.
Unfortunately, we are not living in an age of reason. This event will only further entrench the extremism of MAGA and the far left. In the case of the former, it will likely become very clear for all to see with the forthcoming Republican National Convention due to commence on Monday.
