Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrat turned Independent, announced today she would not seek a second term in office.
Frankly, it's the best thing she's ever done while she's been in office.
Sinema used her office for her own personal gain as was the case when she used PAC money she raised to travel the country running marathons and other races. She also had a long history of using her staff to cover personal errands and needs compelling them to spend money out of pocket to do so. Multiple groups filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee in February 2023 characterizing Sinema's behavior as "a Senator who is not only unresponsive to her constituents, but also disrespectful and even abusive to her employees and wholly unconcerned about her obligations under the law."
Sinema alienated the Democratic base with her thumbs down gesture on the Senate floor against a $15 an hour minimum wage. Arizona Democrats censured Sinema when she opposed changing the Senate filibuster to advance voting rights legislation. She would become an independent in December 2022.
By leaving the political arena, the 2024 Senate race in Arizona is looking up to be a straight up battle between Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego and failed Republican gubernatorial candidate and election denier Kari Lake. Given how batshit crazy Lake is, Arizona has a chance to return to the Democratic column no matter how loud Lake screams "voter fraud" and "rigged election".
There's no need to shed any tears for Sinema. I'm sure she will land a nice sinecure somewhere. Now it's up to Arizona voters to choose someone to better represent them. Provided of course they don't go jump in the lake.
