As we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I am very disturbed to know that nearly half of all Americans agree with defeated, former President Trump's statement that migrants are "poisoning the blood" of the country.
According to a survey conducted by CBS News/YouGov, 47% of Americans are in agreement with Trump's statement about migrants including 82% of GOP voters. Curiously, when the statement wasn't attributed to Trump, 72% of Republicans were in agreement. All of which tells me if Republican voters were asked if they agreed throwing someone off a cliff was a good idea, support for it would shoot up if they knew that Trump had said it.
Yet clearly the most disturbing thing about the poll is that nearly 50% of Americans agree that migrants are "poisoning the blood" of this country. This goes well beyond border security. At this point, we're talking racial purity tests.
All of which means there are a good many Americans who disagree with Dr. King when he said more than 60 years ago:
I have a dream that my four little children will one days live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
For nearly half of all Americans, character doesn't enter into the question. If your color, language, religion or national origin isn't right, then it represents a poison which is unwelcome and, if present, must be removed. This does not bode well for America's survival, let alone its future.
