Four Thoughts on Trump's Demand For "Full Immunity"

Here is defeated, former President Donald Trump's unhinged rant demanding "full immunity" in its all-caps glory:

A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MUST HAVE FULL IMMUNITY, WITHOUT WHICH IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM/HER TO PROPERLY FUNCTION. ANY MISTAKE, EVEN IF WELL INTENDED, WOULD BE MET WITH ALMOST CERTAIN INDICTMENT BY THE OPPOSING PARTY AT TERM END. EVEN EVENTS THAT “CROSS THE LINE” MUST FALL UNDER TOTAL IMMUNITY, OR IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD. THERE MUST BE CERTAINTY. EXAMPLE: YOU CAN’T STOP POLICE FROM DOING THE JOB OF STRONG & EFFECTIVE CRIME PREVENTION BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GUARD AGAINST THE OCCASIONAL “ROGUE COP” OR “BAD APPLE.” SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH “GREAT BUT SLIGHTLY IMPERFECT.” ALL PRESIDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETE & TOTAL PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY, OR THE AUTHORITY & DECISIVENESS OF A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE STRIPPED & GONE FOREVER. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE AN EASY DECISION. GOD BLESS THE SUPREME COURT!

A few thoughts.

First, I would suggest that Trump's predecessors (perhaps save for Richard Nixon) were able to "properly function" without being bestowed with "full immunity".

Second, the fact that Trump is demanding "full immunity" tells us he knows he did something unlawful.

Third, Trump evidently wants law enforcement to also have full immunity although I suspect he would carve out an exception for D.C. Metro Police when confronted by January 6th insurrectionists. Or the people Trump calls hostages. But if one "rogue cop" puts his knee on someone's neck or a "bad apple" mistakenly uses a gun instead of a taser then too bad we'll just have to live with the slight imperfections which cost people their lives.

Finally, if all Presidents should have "complete and total presidential immunity" then that would apply to President Biden. By this standard, Biden would not be subject to impeachment proceedings. Of course, Trump and his supporters do not believe Biden is a legitimately elected President as evidenced by the views of two-thirds of Iowa caucus voters. But whether they like it or not, Joe Biden is President of the United States, and he does not feel any need for presidential immunity.
