Bob Melvin, who has spent the past two seasons at the helm of the San Diego Padres, has jumped ship to sign a three-year contract to manage the San Francisco Giants, their NL West divisional rival replacing Gabe Kapler who was fired during the final weekend of the regular season.
Melvin guided the Padres to a post-season appearance last year, but the Friars took a step back in 2023 barely finishing above .500 and barely finishing ahead of the Giants in the NL West. Although Melvin had a year left on his contract in San Diego, he was granted permission to interview with the Giants amid a difficult relationship with Padres GM A.J. Preller.
Although Melvin has been managing in the big leagues for 20 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Oakland A's and the Padres, managing the Giants is his dream job as Melvin was raised in and around San Francisco. Melvin also spent three seasons of his playing career as a backup catcher for the Giants between 1986-1988.
During his 20-year managerial career, Melvin has made the post-season 8 times but has never reached a World Series. Perhaps some home cooking will change his fortunes.
