The Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 9-8 on a walk off home run by Tim Anderson in front of a capacity crowd of 8,000 fans at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa. This after Chisox closer Liam Hendriks blew a 7-4 lead on a pair of two run HRs by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the top if the inning. In all there were 8 HR hit in the game.
The 9th inning capped off a beautiful evening of baseball played in old uniforms in front of an azure sky, stalks of corn beyond the outfield fence and a hand operated scoreboard. I could have done with more traditional music and traditional announcing but Kevin Costner added his gravitas to the proceedings by leading both teams out on the field through the corn.
All in all, it was the highlight of this 2021 MLB season and the best thing to happen to baseball in a very long time. I'm sure it will become an annual event. While this will put Iowa on the map for something other than caucuses and COVID, in some ways perhaps it would be best to keep this memory and savor it as something precious. But that won't happen when there's money to be made.
On the other hand, Dyersville, Iowa would be a nice place to spend an evening to watch a baseball game or have a catch with my Dad.
