I awoke this morning and learned of the passing of actress Markie Post who died last night. She had evidently been battling cancer for the past four years. Post was 70.
Although she was best known for her portrayal of public defender Christine Sullivan on Night Court, I was just actually thinking about her only last night in a different role. At the moment, I don't have a TV but I do stream episodes of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century on Saturday nights when it airs on MeTV and join the live tweet. Post appears in the episode "The Plot to Kill a City" which will air next Saturday and the Saturday after. These viewings will now take on a much more somber tone.
So too will the Night Court revival. Post's death comes less than a month after her co-star Charlie Robinson. Of course, Harry Anderson who was the lead in the original show died in 2018. In what now seems eerie all three actors reprised their roles on an episode of 30 Rock in 2008. The Night Court revival takes on a different tone for John Larroquette who will reprise his role of Dan Fielding. Christine Sullivan was Fielding's unrequited love. With the possibility of an onscreen reunion now gone now Fielding will have to deal with this loss as well.
I did not realize Post began her career behind the camera as an associate producer of the short-lived CBS game show Double Dare hosted by Alex Trebek. She would soon transition to acting with appearances on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Barnaby Jones and The Incredible Hulk.
Post's first big break came when she was cast as bail bonds woman Terri Shannon on ABC's The Fall Guy starring Lee Majors. She would appear in the show's first three seasons. During her run on The Fall Guy, she made a guest appearance on a Season 2 episode of Night Court as Christine Sullivan. She would leave The Fall Guy the following year and replace Ellen Foley and become a permanent member of the Night Court cast.
Following Night Court, Sullivan co-starred with John Ritter on the CBS sitcom Heart's Afire and would also appear as Cameron Diaz's mother in There's Something About Mary. In more recent years, Post had a recurring role on NBC's Chicago P.D.
Had Post been in good health perhaps she could have returned to her game show roots and been a potential Jeopardy host. Here she is giving out clues on Super Password. R.I.P.
