This is what President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump heard along with considerable booing and jeering as they briefly paid respect to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg outside the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court this morning.
Trump would later claim he hardly heard the chants. But I do not believe this anymore than I believe him when he says COVID-19 "hardly affects anyone."
As I argued yesterday, President Trump is questioning the legitimacy of the outcome of the presidential election because he knows he cannot win it on its merits. Chants of "Vote Him Out!!!" only reinforce his likely fate.
Why else would he be so eager to see to it that a new justice inclined to vote his way on disputed election results if he were confident of victory?
The crowd in front of the Supreme Court also exhorted Trump to "Honor Her Wish" that no appointment of Ginsburg's successor be made until after the election. Obviously this will not be forthcoming with Trump indicating earlier this week that he will formally make his selection on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST.
I think it is also safe to say that Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic which has now claimed more than 200,000 American lives, a catastrophic recession and social and racial unrest also played no small part in the reception Trump received.
One can only hope this is but a prelude to Trump's reckoning on November 3rd.
