U.S. Tops 7 Million COVID-19 Cases as Florida Governor DeSantis Lifts All Restrictions

The United States has now topped 7 million COVID-19 cases. According to Johns Hopkins University, as of this writing, there are 7,015,242 COVID-19 cases in the country with 203,329 deaths. The mortality rate remains at 2.9%.

In the midst of this development, Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has lifted all COVID related restrictions on businesses in the Sunshine State. This means restaurants and bars can operate at full capacity. One would hope Florida businesses would exercise discretion, but I am skeptical. After all Florida has nearly 700,000 cases (693,040) comprising nearly 10% of the COVID-19 cases nationwide. Only California and Texas have more COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 13,795 Floridians with a mortality rate of 2%. I strongly suspect its test positivity rate of 13.38% will increase very sharply within the next couple of weeks. Any test positivity rate above 5% is not good. But Governor DeSantis clearly doesn't give a damn. Ditto for President Trump.
