The Seattle Mariners have won Game 5 of the ALDS in a 15-inning thriller against the Detroit Tigers and with it a trip to the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Mariners' infielder Jorge Polanco, who had been 0-for-5 during the game, slapped a bases loaded single to win the game 3-2.
During the first six innings, Mariners batters fanned 13 times against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal who held them to a run holding Seattle to a single run on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Garver in the second.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the 6th on a 2-run HR by outfielder Kerry Carpenter. The M's tied the game in the 7th on a single by Luis Rivas on his 28th birthday.
Then came nearly 8 scoreless innings before the Mariners won it in the 15th. It's a shame someone had to lose. The Tigers went toe-to-toe with the Mariners and came up just short.
The Mariners advance to the ALCS which will commence on Sunday night against the Blue Jays in Toronto in what will be a battle of two expansion teams from 1977.
